The New York Giants’ running back, Saquon Barkley, is hitting the free agency this off-season. He played 14 games in the 2023 season and had under 1,000-yard season to show for it. With his 1-year, $10M deal ending, the RB is searching for a new home, and it seems like he already knows what to do and who to seek out.

Josina Anderson came out with exciting news about Barkley, explaining how his future was mapped out. His next move has put all the NFL enthusiasts on edge lately. However, the question arises whether the New York Giants will let one of their best offensive players leave.

As reported by Anderson, the RB has shown interest in the Houston Texans as he reportedly contacted their QB, CJ Stroud, for assistance. “I’m told the #Giants and RB Saquon Barkley’s representatives had a ‘good (initial) meeting’ on Wednesday at the Scouting Combine, per source,” wrote Anderson on X and added, “My understanding is, the team remains open to multiple options, including memorializing Barkley’s potential legacy as a NY Giant, pending an agreement on mutual terms.”

Per reports, the Giants will not tag Barkley as a franchise player this year and will let him hit the free agency. His performance with the Giants was average in 2023, with 962 yards and six touchdowns. However, before this, Barkley has had a couple of stellar seasons with the New York team.

Barkley has expressed his desire to be a “Giants for life;” to show his commitment, he downgraded from a $23 million franchise tag deal to an $11 million deal for the 2023 season. This came after rigorous negotiations amid the 2022-2023 season. However, it seems like the Giants are not trying with him anymore.

What will change for the Texans if they pick Barkley?

Currently, the Houston Texans have Devin Singletary as their primary RB. Though Singletary has had a decent season in the past, he has never had a 1,000+ yard season in his career! Adding Barkley might be the punch the Texans need to fare well in the playoffs. Barkley’s 962-yard, 6-TD season is better than Singletary’s 898-yard, 4-TD season.

However, it just came out that the Vikings have also released their RB Alexander Mattison, so the Giants, the Texans, and the Vikings are looking for running backs this year. Hopefully, they can scratch each other’s backs and trade around.
