While the 49ers‘ front office is playing hardball with Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel is busy showing why he’s worth every penny of his $71.6 million deal. The “wide back” isn’t just talking the talk; he’s walking the walk, and he’s bringing the rookies along for the ride.
In a move that would make Jerry Rice proud, Samuel has been spotted putting in overtime with the team’s new blood, including first-round pick Ricky Pearsall. It’s like watching a master chef teach his apprentices the secret sauce of success. As pointed out by ESPN’s Louis Riddick who couldn’t help but draw comparisons between Samuel and Pearsall.
“I think Ricky Pearsall is a three-position player, he really is a four-position player,” Riddick explained. “He can play both outside spots, he can play the slot, he can lineup in the backfield and run routes from there. Who does that? Who is the utility guy like that for San Francisco? That’s Deebo’s role.”

Even Deebo looked impressed by the rookie Ricky Pearsall. “I’ve been really impressed,” Samuel said. “Just going back and watching Ricky, he’s very fluid in a lot of routes. He’s got really good hands.” Samuel’s been playing the role of mentor as he pushes for physical excellence as well.

He’s been hitting the gym harder than a linebacker on a blitz. Social media’s been buzzing with clips of Deebo working with his strength coach, Nicholas Hill. The man’s pushing himself to the limit, clocking 21 mph on the treadmill. While some might see this new mentorship role as a threat to Samuel’s position, the veteran seems unfazed.
Instead, he’s embracing his role as a leader, showing the rookies what it takes to survive and thrive in the NFL. It’s like he’s preparing his succession plan, ensuring the 49ers’ offensive juggernaut keeps rolling long after he’s hung up his cleats. Meanwhile, coach Kyle Shanahan has his hands full with Brandon Aiyuk situation which doesn’t seem to be moving toward any solution
Kyle Shanahan’s dilemma of managing the Brandon Aiyuk headache

Kyle Shanahan’s got a different kind of problem on his hands. Aiyuk, fresh off a career-high season with 1,342 yards and 7 touchdowns, is playing hardball over his contract extension.
The situation’s gotten messier than a fumble in the mud. Aiyuk’s not shy about his frustrations, especially when it comes to leaked contract details. “It’s a little bit frustrating,” Aiyuk confessed on The Pivot. “Especially when we’re getting down to details like that. Like, we’re putting down exact numbers in negotiation, where that’s talks between the team and my team.”
Shanahan, for his part, is trying to keep his cool. “Some guys come because they want to avoid a fine, and some don’t,” he said about Aiyuk’s absence from mandatory minicamp. “But regardless, it doesn’t change anything when those guys have come. We know what the process is. We know what the business part is.”

But the clock’s ticking. Aiyuk’s scheduled to play the 2024 season on a fifth-year option worth $14.124 million. That’s chump change compared to the $30 million per year he’s reportedly seeking. It’s a game of chicken, and neither side seems ready to blink.

As the drama unfolds, one thing’s clear: the 49ers’ receiving corps is stacked. With Samuel leading by example and Aiyuk pushing for top dollar, Shanahan’s got more weapons than he knows what to do with. It’s a good problem to have, but a problem nonetheless.
In the end, it’s all part of the game. As Deebo Samuel wisely put it, “At the end of the day, you want to get what you deserve and you hope it happens, but it’s not going to happen in the timely manner that you want it to happen.” Ain’t that the truth in the NFL?
