Chase Young has been playing the final year of his rookie contract. He made his debut in 2020 after playing college football at Ohio State, where he hailed as the best NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year of the season. The 49ers may have acquired Young at a reasonable cost (considering his lingering concerns from a season-ending ACL injury), but it does resolve their pass rush issue. Well, a player like Young will only add pressure on quarterbacks.

49ers defensive coordinator, Steven Bernard Wilks recently said, “We can do a better job on the back end in coverage, whether it’s man or zone, and allowing the quarterback to hold the ball a little longer. Watching tape, I think we’re close, I think we’re close a lot. We’re going to eventually get there. I’m not really pressing right now about the lack of production because I feel like it’s going to come.”

It may be too much to ask, but Young would surely serve as the right weapon in this rush hour. At least, when it comes to the 49ers’ areas of improvement, be it failing to pressure or sack the quarterback or tackle consistently. Only time will tell.
