The AFC and NFC conference championships concluded in complete drama today. The San Francisco 49ers had a great season in the regular games. However, they are often known for struggling to make big comebacks, like initially was seen against the Packers in the divisional round.
While the team had overcome the Green Bay side after a 21-14 deficit, it was hard to expect the same after they were behind by 14 points against the Detroit Lions in the first quarter itself. Yet, they surprised everyone by staging another impressive comeback in the NFC championship game on Sunday. The Niners have now set up a rematch with the Chiefs after a long 4 years gap.

The 49ers surprised everyone by staging another impressive comeback against the Lions in the NFC championship game on Sunday. They massively overturned a 17-point deficit in the second half to beat the Lions with 3 points at 34-31. The two stars of this showdown were Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk, who just turned the table around, and rekindled the hopes of the Niners’ fans in the stands.

The Lions had a chance at an interception, but the ball bounced off Kindle Vildor’s face mask and turned into a 51-yard gain for Aiyuk, due to a ladybug luck. QB Brock Purdy then connected with Aiyuk for a 6-yard touchdown. After a fumble by Jahmyr Gibbs, McCaffrey ran for a 1-yard touchdown, tying the game at 24. The Lions faced difficulties with Reynolds dropping a pass, leading to a punt.
Despite the opportunity to down the ball at the 1-yard line, the Lions made a mistake. Purdy drove the Niners to a 33-yard field goal by Jake Moody, giving them their first lead. Campbell chose not to attempt a game-tying field goal on fourth-and 3 from the Niners’ 30. Goff’s incomplete pass resulted in the Niners driving an assured TD. Goff later threw a touchdown pass to Jameson Williams with 56 seconds left, but San Francisco recovered the onside kick to secure the win.
This victory marked the Niners’ return to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2019 when they lost to the Chiefs, their upcoming rivals at the same stage. Additionally, this win also made some remarkable moments in NFL history. Let’s take a look!

This recent victory is significant for the Niners, who had a similar halftime lead against the Lions in 1957 but lost. This win makes the 49ers the team with the most playoff wins in NFL history, surpassing the Patriots and Packers with 38 wins.
Coach Kyle Shanahan now has an 8-3 playoff record, tying him with Tom Flores, and second best among coaches with at least 10 games, only behind Andy Reid, since Shanahan became the HC in 2017. While the 49ers journey continues, they are approaching the end, with a chance to make up for their loss to KC in their last Super Bowl appearance in 2019, where they were ahead with a 31-20 score, but lost in the end.
