The North Side is still at sea! Last season, Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers brought in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. They spent their offseason considering who will be the starter. Even though they decided to move with Wilson, Tomlin’s squad kept on experimenting with the QB position on the gridiron. And the result is? They aren’t sure whom to move forward with in the next season. But that’s not where the story ends.
Mike Tomlin’s team is now also looking for another quarterback. That’s too even without fixing their existing two QBs. Enter Sam Darnold, the current Vikings’ QB who took them to the playoffs in the 2024 season. But Darnold needs to be cautious before considering wearing Black and Gold in the upcoming season.
Why? Well, as per NFL analyst Colin Cowherd, “I always consider the management just as much or more than the money. And for Sam Darnold, I’d be very wary of Pittsburgh. I do not think the Pittsburgh Steelers currently possess the ability to get the most out of a quarterback. That doesn’t mean Sam Darnold couldn’t be a Steeler and be pretty good, but…” Mike Tomlin’s team cannot develop a quarterback.

On Sunday, Cowherd highlighted Dianna Russini’s report, in which she stated that Pittsburgh is making a strong push for Sam Darnold, though Seattle is still considered the front-runner. But as per the analyst, Darnold should think carefully before choosing Mike Tomlin’s team. Because unlike other teams, their focus is not to develop a QB. Instead, they prioritize defense.
He further expressed, “There’s about six or seven, maybe a few more, but six or seven teams in this league that I think are uniquely equipped to get the most out of any quarterback – whether it’s a star or a B quarterback.” He isn’t wrong. However, he didn’t stop there.
Recalling some examples, Cowherd said, “Sam Darnold B+ the Rams with Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco, Andy Reid Kansas City, Sean Payton getting the most out of Bo Nix, Kevin O’ Connell in Minnesota, there’s more. I’d say there’s seven or eight organizations. Philadelphia has done a good job (with) the o line, the coaching, the coordinating, they put a lot of resources around the organization to help the quarterback. I do not consider the Pittsburgh Steelers one of those.” Translation: go anywhere you want, but be wary of the Steelers. According to Cowherd, Mike Tomlin’s team spent heavily on the defensive side of the ball but still struggled with their offensive line, despite multiple attempts to fix it.

Is Sam Darnold risking his career by considering a move to the Steelers' QB carousel?
Have an interesting take?
Sam Darnold, who just caught everyone’s attention by leading his Vikings to the playoffs, is a fresh QB available in the market. So, as Mike Tomlin might be eyeing him, the analyst wants to give him a warning to take a pause and rethink such decisions. So, at the end, when he is unable to perform that better due to a lack of offensive strategies, he isn’t thrown out of consideration the next time, just like Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
But the Steelers’ placekicker is definitely trying to throw in the quarterback’s absence in the team.
Mike Tomlin has a new quarterback at home?
The Steelers are in dire need of a quarterback. With Sam Darnold’s uncertainty, the Steelers are fixing other spots, meanwhile. Most recently, Mike Tomlin and the team made a blockbuster trade for WR D.K. Metcalf on Sunday evening. With his entry, team’s kicker Chris Boswell took to Instagram to welcome the wide receiver. But along with it, he also acknowledged his team’s lack of a QB.

For this, Boswell shared a picture of him holding a football. But along with it, he wrote, “I got this. GP and DK down there somewhere.” Boswell sarcastically highlighted that he could be the quarterback in the right player’s absence, as the weapons are already stacking up. It seems that Mike Tomlin and the Steelers’ delayed action in deciding their QB is frustrating their players as well.
So, it remains to be seen what update comes up next. Until then, the Steelers are reportedly eyeing Sam Darnold at a potential $160 million price!
