Early this year, the Broncos released Russell Wilson. The teams weren’t ready to shell money for the veteran quarterback. The Steelers signed a 1-year contract, $1.2 million contract, his minimum price. Fast forward to December 2024, 13 weeks are gone. The team is 9-2, and Mr. Unlimited is 4-1, enjoying the season.

The feelings reflected during the post-game conference after winning the week 13 game against the Bengals. He celebrated his 36th birthday on November 29 and when asked his age, he casually replied, “I just turned 36 the other day. I feel like I’m 26. Maybe 30, but I think the best part about it is we’re having fun, man. We’re having a blast doing it.” And it’s the most hilarious reply one could think of. But aptly so, he has looked good on the field.

With the 4-1 performance as a starter, his ‘5-year plan’ in the NFL seems an achievable thing. Russell Wilson also planned on winning trophies for the Steelers. And they are 1st in the AFC North, set for a playoff spot. Most remarkably, it has given a befitting reply to his haters, who doubted he could perform.

It all started in the early season when the HC Mike Tomlin named him starting QB. But he re-aggravated an injury, and Justin Fields started for the team. He also had a great beginning with a 4-2 record. But when Russell Wilson became fit, Tomlin was at the crossroads. Many analysts were in favor of the young QB. However, there was a problem. You don’t keep a Super Bowl winner sitting on a bench on the sidelines. That’s what happened.

Among the analysts who wanted Fields to play, Terry Bradshaw stood out as a prominent one. Former Steelers QB with 4 Super Bowls and 3 decades of analysis as a TV commentator, he said, “I totally disagree with this decision by Mike Tomlin, the head coach, I would stay with Fields. Fields fits this team’s personality. I don’t understand the move.” Well, that was understandable. Wilson came out from a disastrous 11-19 for the Broncos in 2 seasons, and they couldn’t qualify for the playoffs.

Even Bradshaw also cited the same performance and claimed that if Sean Payton couldn’t get Russ to win games, there was something wrong with the quarterback. However, the signal caller was hearing everything. In his debut game, the week 7 game against the Jets, he made 16 of 29 passes in 264 passing yards with 2 touchdowns. He had the most yards on debut by a Steelers QB.

He also got smooth with the games. Against the Bengals, he had 414 yards for 3 touchdowns and 1 interception, while Joe Burrow, 27 years old, only had 309 yards with the same number of touchdowns and interceptions. Now, that speaks volumes about his fitness even at the age of 36 years. Steeler Nation is pumped. They are dreaming of a Super Bowl.
