Once again, welcome to the Russell Wilson and free agency drama. Every day it takes another crazy twist. Now, the twist involves millions of dollars worth of salary. If reports are to be believed, the veteran QB is seeking a $20-30 million annual salary – because when no one’s choosing you, why not throw out a number and see who bites?
As per Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland, Russell Wilson has contacted at least three franchises and made his demands clear: the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, and Tennessee Titans. However, none of them have responded to his demands, but hey, shoot your shot, right? Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers—the one team that could have given him a real playoff chance—seem to have left him on read.

But these demands by Russell aren’t just wishful, it’s because of his exemplary track record. He may not be in his prime years now, but he still put up a great show last season. In the 15 games that he played, Wilson threw for 2,682 yards, 26 TDs and 8 interceptions, 66.4% completion rate and a 92.7 passer rating. These stats may not scream – MVP, but they are still better than what many teams have under center.
However, what we can’t ignore is the fact that Wilson’s market value has taken a hit, mostly due to his struggles last season. Like he ended the season on a five-game losing streak. And his playoff performance against the Ravens didn’t do him any favors as well. While his salary demands may deter some teams, his experience and leadership could still make him a viable option for quarterback-needy franchises.

Meanwhile, the Steelers are moving in a different direction. Despite Russell Wilson’s initial success after taking over from Justin Fields, Pittsburgh is reportedly more interested in Aaron Rodgers, who visited the team last Friday. With no deal in place yet, Rodgers remains an option, but Wilson appears to be further down their priority list.
Steelers’ uncertainty & Wilson’s cryptic message
Pittsburgh, once thought to be Wilson’s best shot at another playoff run, seems to be moving in a different direction. The Steelers hosted Aaron Rodgers on a free-agent visit, signaling their interest in the four-time MVP over Wilson. Given that Pittsburgh could have locked Wilson down by now if they truly wanted him, it’s clear he is not their top priority.

What’s your perspective on:
Is Russell Wilson's $30 million demand justified, or is he overestimating his current market value?
Have an interesting take?
In response to the speculation surrounding his future, Wilson took to X (formerly Twitter) and posted a two-word message: “Relentless Confidence.” A subtle dig at the Steelers? A message to potential suitors? Or just Wilson trying to manifest a big payday? Either way, it raises questions about where he’ll land next.
While Wilson remains on the market, teams are weighing their options. The Giants, Browns, and Titans may not offer him a playoff-ready roster, but in a quarterback-hungry league, anything is possible. However, unless he adjusts his price tag, Wilson might be in for a longer wait than he expected.
