It has been over four weeks since the Steelers were knocked out by the Ravens in the wild-card round. Yet, tensions between Russell Wilson and both team and HC Mike Tomlin continue to linger. With Wilson under the center, the Black and the Gold lost their final five games of the season. Now that Wilson is out of contract, the Steelers want to close his chapter in Pittsburgh as there is “no chance” Tomlin would want him on the roster. Too subtle? Tomlin went as far as confirming that Justin Fields has already taken the steps to become the 1st choice quarterback. But despite all signs pointing to an exit, Wilson’s attachment to the franchise suggests this story isn’t over just yet.

“I thought the way he handled his professional circumstance was impressive. I thought he brought an urgency to his day-to-day work regardless of his role,” Tomlin said, praising Justin Fields. Wilson – now officially a free agent – his time in Pittsburgh seems all but over. But you dare not question his allegiance to the Steelers.

Once the Super Bowl is over on Feb 10, the NFL is going global again. On Friday, the Black and Gold fans woke up to an international surprise with the Steelers sharing the venue for the NFL’s 1st-ever game in Croke Park, Dublin – the largest arena in Ireland. Despite being shown the exit door by the Steelers, Wilson couldn’t help but react to the news with a heartfelt response.

Rejoicing the moment, the 36-year-old shared an IG story with his fans, sharing the league’s and his team’s announcement. The quarterback captioned his IG story, “🖤💛.” For the Steelers, it’s a great reunion situation. Their owner, the Rooney family, has roots in Newry, County Down. And guess what? They have already played a game at the Croke Park.

It was almost 3 decades ago in 1997, when they had a preseason game against the Bears. With the Steelers’ opponent yet to be announced, a matchup against the New York Giants—another franchise with deep Irish roots—would make for an unforgettable clash. After all, the Mara family has owned the Giants since the team’s founding in 1925.  A great opportunity that Russell Wilson might miss out!

While it’s been some time since Croke Park hosted an NFL game, Dublin did see gridiron action when the Penn State Nittany Lions and the University of Central Florida clashed for the Croke Park Classic in 2014.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Russell Wilson's time with the Steelers over, or does he have one last comeback in him?

Have an interesting take?

The NFL is trying to spread its global footprint with up to 8 regular season games overseas. Two games are scheduled at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Wembley Stadium in London will host the Jaguars game. The Colts will play at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, while the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium will host the Dolphins. 2025 is going to be crazy!

However, everyone is waiting to see what happens to Mr. Unlimited. The uncertainty prevails strongly!

Will Mike Tomlin consider Russell Wilson or reject him?

In 2024, Russ signed a 1-year league minimum $1.25 million deal with the Steelers. His performance initially was great, but in the end, they lost 4 regular season games in a row. Even in the wildcard game against the Ravens, their slump continued. They lost and were eliminated. Since then, HC Mike Tomlin has been giving signals that they want to go into the future with Justin Fields, not Russell Wilson. The rejection is becoming obvious with each passing day.

However, the team president, Art Rooney II, made promising claims and said, “I think both of them see themselves as starters, and I don’t know if they want to share the same job again next year.” But the fans want success. And if they are trying to build a team for years to come, Fields aged 26 years has an upper hand over the 36-year-old Super Bowl winner.

Neither Russell Wilson nor Mike Tomlin has addressed the issues that led to 5 losses in a row to end the season. In all those 5 games, the O-line totally faltered. They couldn’t even score more than 17 points. The inability to score points cost them what looked like a potential trophy season.

However, the situation is not clear yet. The free agency opens on March 12. Till then, they can discuss their plans and vision for the 2025 season.
