The Steelers are still licking their wounds after an ugly 28-14 smackdown courtesy of Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. And if you thought the season-ending loss was painful, buckle up—this offseason could get even messier in the Steel City. Why? Well, where do we start?
Russell Wilson played on a one-year contract, and now his future with the team is up in the air. Meanwhile, Justin Fields just wrapped up the final year of his rookie deal, leaving the Steelers with two quarterbacks and a whole lot of questions. And let’s not forget head coach Mike Tomlin, whose seat feels a little hotter after that wild-card round embarrassment. Fans are growing louder in calling for his head, and let’s just say patience isn’t exactly a Pittsburgh virtue.
However, Wilson has every intention of returning to the Steelers after his one-year deal expired. “Yeah, that’s the plan,” the QB stated on his return for the 2025 season. “I love it here and everything else. I think we have a great football team. Obviously, it didn’t end the way we wanted it to, and I think there’s a lot more to do.” So, Wilson appears to believe that he’s gonna get a contract extension soon. But what about the front office?

I mean, do they really want him to return with the roster? See, there’s been a lot of frustration this season regarding the quarterback in the Steelers locker room. Initially, the team named him the starting QB for the season. Enter a calf injury during a practice season, and Wilson was ruled out of the first five weeks of the regular season. In his absence, the backup QB Fields took the helm, where he had a 3-2 record in the first five weeks.
However, things started to get pretty interesting when Wilson returned to action in week 6. and man, the team welcomed him with the highest-scoring game of the season for the Steelers. Though Wilson recorded four-consecutive wins for the team, there were internal concerns in the team regarding the starting QB. There were some pointers that Wilson often failed to recognize wide-open receivers and held onto the ball too long, resulting in unnecessary sacks and fumbles.
That led to a disagreement in the locker room as the roster leaned towards Fields over Wilson. So there’s still a question if the Steelers want to go ahead with Russell Wilson after this season. “I think they’ve known that I’ve always wanted to be here and play here, but it is also a process,” the 36-year-old QB stated further. Looks like this off-season is gonna be one h*ll of an off-season for the Steelers.

Terry Bradshaw reacts to the Steelers loss
There were reports even before the postseason kicked off that the Pittsburgh team may part ways with Mike Tomlin after this season. Well, the wild-card loss to their bitter rivals worked as fuel in the fire for the head coach. And now, not just the fans but legends like Terry Bradshaw reacted that the franchise should part ways with Tomlin.
“The defense was horrible, couldn’t stop the run, couldn’t stop the pass, couldn’t do anything right last night,” Bradshaw said after the wild-card round. “This doesn’t look anything like the Steeler teams we’ve seen.” Bradshaw was joined by Jimmy Johnson on the Fox NFL Sunday and talked about the Steelers’ ugly loss against the Ravens.

Well, Bradshaw’s been part of the Pittsburgh team for his entire NFL career as a quarterback. And his statement justifies his statement for the team. However, Johnson was one-step ahead of Bradshaw when he talked not about the head coach’s parting ways with the team but head coach swap. “I’ve got no inside information, but things are stale in Pittsburgh,” Johnson said. “Things are stale in Dallas. Just food for thought, how about a coaching swap? Mike McCarthy’s a Pittsburgh guy. Let him go to Pittsburgh, let Mike Tomlin go to Dallas. Both franchises would be excited.”
See, the thing is, both McCarthy and Tomlin don’t seem to be leaving their respective franchises. In the case of McCarthy, Jerry Jones hasn’t renewed his contract. On the other hand, as per his contract deal, Tomlin can’t be traded to the other teams. All in all, it would be interesting to find Russell Wilson’s and Mike Tomlin’s future with the Steelers.
