Should Justin Fields' impressive stats keep him as the Steelers' starting QB over a recovering Russell Wilson?

It’s a do or die situation for Russell Wilson! The Steelers are standing in 2nd position in the AFC North, with four wins and two losses under Justin Fields. Well, that’s kind of a good start into the season, but coach Mike Tomlin wants to change his quarterback. The reason? Well, it could be Field’s arguably inaccurate pass, or as some believe to be the bias of the head coach for Russell Wilson. Whatever, the reason is, a journalist and a former NFL player posed a caution for the HC and Russell Wilson, stating some locker room concerns.

During a discussion in The Rich Eisen Show, S.I.’s Albert Breer, shared his take on the Steelers’ recent ongoing quarterback situation. He highlighted that as coach Mike Tomlin could go with Russell Wilson this time, “….every indication I’ve gotten is that the people in that building love Justin Fields. Coaches, players, there are a lot of folks in that facility that do not want Mike Tomlin to go away from Justin Fields right now. That feels like Fields is representative of what they are as a football team, and helps them in the running game.” However, the journalist also mentioned the pitfalls of Fields as “he’s not perfect as a passer, but he’s doing plenty and he’s going to keep getting better and he has improved week over week.

Now, that sounds similar to what former NFL player, Dan Orlovksy said on October 16 – “I think if they go to [Russell Wilson] and they lose in Sunday Night Football to the Jets, it’s really hard to look at your locker room. And I think the world of Mike Tomlin.” If this happens, then Tomlin could face raised eyebrows from the facility, due to his arguably biased decision. Nevertheless, Albert Breer still thinks about the open opportunity for the franchise to go back to Justin Fields whenever this situation pops in.

After all, many “feel like Russell Wilson would limit them on offense in a way that Justin Fields does not, which [Breer] thinks is a big part of the reason why so many people there just wish that Tomlin would stick with Fields.” Now that looks like an extreme and experimental case, especially when, on one side, Wilson hasn’t opened up yet in the regular season due to his injury. While, on the other, Justin Fields has completed 106 in 160 attempts with 5 touchdowns and just one interceptions. So, these stats definitely do not let Fields deserve benching.

Hence, it remains to be seen what’s coming up next for the team and their quarterbacks. For now, no one knows the situation better than coach Mike Tomlin himself.

With whom Mike Tomlin is going: Russell Wilson or Justin Fields?

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is considering whether to start Russell Wilson or Justin Fields at quarterback against the New York Jets this Sunday. After Wilson proved his health during practice last week, Tomlin said he’s still “in consideration” for the starting job. That’s why both Wilson and Fields will practice, and Tomlin will make the final decision “closer to game time.” Now, there’s even a chance both quarterbacks could play during the game. So, it’s quite an interesting week coming up for the Steel City.

Wilson, who has been listed as QB1 throughout his injury in the depth chart, participated in a full week of practice for the first time since his injury in early September. Talking about his current status, coach Mike Tomlin said Wilson showed he can move well in the pocket and protect himself, which is key for his possible return. However, Tomlin hasn’t decided how practice reps will be split between the two quarterbacks yet.

On the other hand, Fields, who has been solid for the Steelers, leading the team to a 4-2 record, also could get the baton again. But according to latest reports, despite his success, Tomlin has hinted that exploring Russell Wilson as a starter could be a good opportunity for the team to decide for the future as well.

However, he made sure that it doesn’t mean Fields has performed poorly – it’s about evaluating all options to make the team even better.
