With only a month of offseason practice left, things with the Pittsburgh Steelers and their quarterbacks seem to be heating up. Ever since Justin Fields was traded from the Bears, all eyes have been on the vet, Russell Wilson. Now, with the new offensive coach, Arthur Smith, putting his plans in motion for the team, the younger star could wind up being a better fit for QB1. However, the 35-year-old could keep his spot by keeping a few things in mind.

In a recent episode of ESPN’s Get Up, Wilson ended up receiving some advice to stay as Mike Tomlin’s starter. The host, Mike Greenberg, and his guests, the former NFL star, Harry Douglas, Kimberley A. Martin, and even Damien Woody, discussed the competition between the two quarterbacks and agreed that the 35-year-old would definitely start the season. However, they all claimed that Fields could take over “at some point.”

“His skill set matches what Arthur Smith wants to do, and that’s running the football,” added Douglas. While the former athlete seems to be picking team Fields in the Steelers quarterback battle, he is not alone in his opinions. In fact, just earlier today, another ESPN analyst, Louis Riddick, also stated that the team’s new offensive prowess was “tailor-made” for the 25-year-old and his skills.

With the former WR backing Fields’ potential Steelers rein, it looks like Wilson might end up taking a back seat later in this season. However, not everyone seems to think that the former Bears star will be named as Tomlin’s starting quarterback.

Earlier this month, NFL fans were taken aback when Justin Fields opened up about his teammate’s rivalry with Russell Wilson. After all, the young quarterback had been traded to the Steelers after they had inked a deal with the father of four. With the 25-year-old admitting to going head-to-head with the quarterback, the whole world seemed to have opinions.

According to reports from The Athletic’s senior Steelers writer, Mark Kaboly, it was claimed that Wilson would “undoubtedly” be the team’s starting quarterback. He even added that “it doesn’t matter how well Fields plays in the spring or summer.” The reporter elaborated on what he meant by saying that Pittsburgh had chosen the 35-year-old and they “will see it through.”

Apart from being the Steelers’ first choice, Kaboly stated that Wilson was exactly what Pittsburgh and “their young offense” needed right now. After all, analysts considered the 35-year-old a Hall of Fame quarterback who could be a great and consistent leader for the new recruits. In fact, the sportswriter even agreed that “Fields is the future, but Wilson is the present.”

The author might know what he wants to see on the field this season. However, with Wilson’s starting position in danger, there is a chance that the quarterback might only open the season for the Steelers before passing the baton to Fields.
