The 37 points were the most scored by the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2021. It clearly tells how Russell Wilson is impacting the team. Mr. Unlimited has been performing incredibly well in the games. Especially in Week 7, where he helped the team to get a spectacular win over the Jets 37-15. Wilson’s deep throws to George Pickens in that game even helped the Pittsburgh Steelers improve their passing attack. This is also evident in his personal stats – Wilson’s 109.0 rating was more than the backup QB Justin Fields.
But the interesting part is, earlier Russell Wilson was not trusted by many over Fields. However, with recent victories as well as elevating the team to the top of the NFL standings 7-2, many are changing their stance on the quarterback. Among those, one is NFL Insider Jordan Schultz. The one who recently appeared at ‘The Herd with Colin Cowherd‘ show to talk about the 35-year-old.
During the discussion, Schultz said, “I just love this football team and I love him (Russell Wilson) because it’s old-school football with a new twist. It’s Russell Wilson’s diet, it’s the Seahawks’ version of him, but maybe not as much of the read option. And when they went three weeks ago, and they decided Colin, they were going to move on from Justin Fields. I was the first one that say I think it’s a mistake, I don’t love this move. They were 4-2, it looked like they were in a good position, but Russell Wilson has taken them to a new level.” How?

Well, the NFL insider thinks, a key moment for Russell Wilson’s fit with the Steelers came during a long conversation he had with coach Mike Tomlin. They spent hours together, bonding deeply. And Schultz believes this was when Wilson truly became the face of the Steelers at least for this season.
In addition to that, this scenario also reminds him of another Seattle approach. He said that the Steelers are “….so physical defensively and it also reminds me of something that Richard Sherman told me once where he said with Seattle we used to tell Russ just get us to 14 get us to 17 we’ll do the rest that’s the sense I get now with this defense which really to me is the most efficient across the league.” Hence, it gives him the same feeling.
Russell Wilson hasn’t fully brought back the level of play he had with the Seahawks. That was where he achieved a passer rating of 101.8 with 37,059 yards, 292 touchdowns, and 87 interceptions in 158 games. However, he is still bringing some of that essence to Pittsburgh, as Jordan Schultz pointed out. And with this level of game, Wilson gets another reason to not retire from the league soon.
How long will Russell Wilson play?
After going one-year rental for the Steel City, Russell Wilson might be looking for some more effective seasons with the team. But what about the retirement talks, which especially began during his calf injury this offseason? Well, to answer this, the quarterback himself addressed it in a recent interview. He mentioned his longevity in the league directly.

The 35YO said, “I definitely wanna play another five to seven more years. I think that has always been my goal. I have been very clear about that since the beginning. That has always been my mindset, you know the longevity of the game.”
Interestingly, Wilson is one of the healthiest quarterbacks in the NFL who rarely miss time due to injuries. So, yes, if he talks about playing in the future in terms of physicality, then he might be true. After all, his dream is to win two Super Bowls within the next five years!
