It has been a tough couple of years for the Russell Wilson. Denver Broncos released the quarterback and suffered a massive cap hit. His dismal performance in the last two seasons and premature release posed a plethora of questions on the veteran.

However, Wilson is now all set to make his comeback this season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, with whom he signed a one-year contract with the minimum veteran salary. A former teammate recently opened up about the impact of his exit and why he gets a bad name from his time in the Broncos.

When an athlete leaves, especially when it is a quarterback of the standing like Wilson, his teammates also have to deal with a wave of emotions. Denver’s wide receiver, Courtland Sutton, revealed how the veteran’s departure “was a tough pill to swallow” on the DNVR Sports podcast. “You see the writing on the wall,” said Sutton, talking about the time speculations flew in the air around Wilson’s future in Denver.

You hear the murmurs, you know, that go on at the end of the season and going into the beginning part of the offseason, that certain things are going to happen, and you know, at the back of the mind, you hope that they don’t happen.” Ultimately, the WR expressed that the franchise and decision-making people always talk about the situation as “business is business.”

While Sutton thinks “that they made a business decision,” he is glad that the QB found a new home pretty soon in the offseason. The WR further feels that it is a testament to Wilson’s “caliber” and further discusses what attributes of his former teammate might have the Steelers sold on him.

Sutton feels Wilson gets an unjustified “bad rep” for Denver

The WR spoke highly of his former offense partner and expressed that it must be the caliber and the way Wilson handles his work and relations that would’ve swayed the Steelers in his favor. “…And you know, the way that he cares, the way he goes about his work and his business, I think that that’s something that Pittsburgh saw and -ultimately knew that they couldn’t pass up on.” Sutton further said that he was “excited” to watch the QB in the upcoming season and talked about how he got a bad rapport during his time with the Broncos.

I think that he’s gonna have a lot of success,” said the WR. “I think that Russ is gonna continue to build his legacy, continue to build his Hall of Fame legacy, and I say that very boldly because I think that he gets a bad rep.” He further explained how Wilson, being the quarterback, had to bear the brunt of the “wrath” in the last two seasons when the offense couldn’t play well.

QB position gets hit the hardest because that’s the guy that controls everything that goes on with the offense,” said Sutton while saying it’s actually the responsibility of all 11 players. He ended by saying that he wishes Wilson would end his career on a high note in the future and expressed his appreciation for the “lessons” he learned from the veteran.

Courtland Sutton’s praises and kind words are just a testament to Russell Wilson’s impact on his teammates and to his personality, on and off the field. As the upcoming season draws nearer, the quarterback is determined to leave no stone unturned in his quest to revive his Seattle glory.
