Russell Wilson’s career feels like a movie trilogy at this point. The first act? Pure dominance in Seattle—Super Bowl champ, perennial Pro Bowler, and the face of the franchise. Then came the second chapter, the Denver-Pittsburgh saga, where things got… let’s just say complicated. Now, we’re staring at act three, and the big question is: what role is he playing?

Is he gonna suit up as a QB1 for a new team, or is he stepping into that wise mentor role, like Yoda guiding the next Jedi? Either way, a $20 million deal with a new team is being thrown into the script. Oh no, the deal’s not done yet. Recently, Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports used his analyst skills to put five veteran QBs on new teams. And of course, Russell Wilson is one of them. His new home? The New York Giants.

Benjamin believes that the Giants have no. 3 overall pick option in the draft and they’re surely gonna pick a QB. Meanwhile, he further mentioned that the team may lock Wilson to a one-year, $20 million deal in 2025. “His days of dominating the highlight reel as the dual-threat star of the Seattle Seahawks are long gone, but Wilson at least flashed some of his trademark deep-ball touch midway through 2024,” Benjamin explained

“By the end, of course, the sluggishness that marked his ill-fated Denver Broncos’ pitstop had reared its head again. He’s clearly still a functional play-action passer, but without the elusiveness of his youth, it’s hard to see anyone betting on him as more than a one-year rental, and even then, he’ll likely need to compete for the job.” Translation? Benjamin believes that Wilson is no longer the electrifying, dual-threat QB he once was with the Seahawks.

Sure, his first seven games with the Steelers in 2024 saw the Steel City go 6-1. But as the season went on, his performance started to decline, similar to how things fell apart when he was with the Broncos. And now, as it appears, teams aren’t gonna risk a long-term deal with him—at least that’s what Benjamin believes. After all, the Steelers too signed him on a one-year deal in the last season.

Besides, the New York team has the no. 3 overall pick option in the April’s draft this year. That means Wilson probably needs to compete if he’s looking for a QB1 role. Compete with a rookie. However, the odds are favoring that the veteran QB’s is probably gonna be a mentor of the rookie QB if the Giants offer him a one-year deal. And just like that, folks, the third act of his career is probably gonna begin.

All in all, looks like the Pittsburgh team is almost certain to move on from Wilson, but they still have a lot of things to tackle in this offseason.

Russell Wilson is done, but what about the Steelers’ guard?

After playing for four seasons with the Chicago Bears, the Steelers signed the offensive lineman James Daniels on a three-year lucrative $26.5 million deal back in 2022. His track record? Well, standing at 6’4” and weighing over 300 pounds, Daniels started every game that he played in his first two seasons with the team.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Russell Wilson's career winding down, or can he still surprise us with a comeback?

Have an interesting take?

However, his final year of the contract was cut short due to a torn Achilles season-ending injury in week 4. Now, that’s where things get pretty interesting. You see, after his final season of contract, Daniels is hitting the free agency. That means the Steelers need to make a call for their guard. However, Garry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes that the chances of Steelers Re-Signing OG James Daniels is, “None.”

Yep, you read that absolutely right. The Steelers signed him as an unrestricted free agent in the 2022 season. Since then, the 27-year-old has been a good start for the team, living up to his contract. However, before his final start season could kick off, Daniels told the reporters that the team’s not planning to offer him a contract extension.

Hmm, it could be the money reasons. I mean, he’s just 27 years old, and he’s already in his eighth season. As simple as it sounds, the guy’s surely looking for a handsome deal before starting his 2025 season. And the Steelers? Umm, nah, they’re probably not looking to extend his contract. However, considering he’s one of the best guard available in the free agency this season, one team or another is surely gonna sign him—unless his Achilles decides to make a surprise visit.
