A new tide has come in after rumors circulated about the bad blood between Russell Wilson and coach Sean Payton escalating to a point where the quarterback could be released from the Broncos. According to NFL news account Dov Kleiman, the chances of the Denver Broncos retaining Wilson might be looking again.

In an interview for Mad Dog Sports Radio, coach Payton clarified that the team is still figuring out the logistics of Wilson’s contract. Broncos seem to be in a bind at the moment, with an important decision at hand that could cost them a blow of $85 million.

Why the suspense around Wilson?

Post the 2022 season, Payton joined Denver and got to work immediately. Soon enough, news of his tiffs with Wilson began emerging, with the QB getting benched twice in his last two games of the season. Many fans claimed that the coach was deliberately “sabotaging” Wilson, whereas others believed the QB was weighing the offense down. Among all these conjectures, the deadline of Wilson’s contract inches closer with no clear decision from the Broncos out yet. However, Coach Payton has assured that the “decision will be sooner than later.

The delay is all to blame on the money part of the deal. If Wilson continues next season, he is guaranteed to earn $35.4 million, as per Spotrac. However, if the team decides to drop him, they will have to pay a dead cap of $85 million. Furthermore, if they choose to drop or trade the QB before March 17, the team loses an additional $32-49 million. Because of these complexities, the decision regarding Wilson’s future in Denver remains undecided.
