From a QB room that looked empty at the start of this offseason, the Giants now have 3 in their roster. It all started with bringing back Tommy DeVito on a 1-year, $1.03M deal. Then, for some time, the Giants flirted with the idea of Aaron Rodgers. Seeing the 4-time NFL MVP go to Pittsburgh, the Giants had enough of the Rodgers saga. They shut down Rodgers by bringing in Jameis Winston on a two-year, $8M deal. Some believed Winston was going to be a day 1 starter as the Giants looked ahead of the NFL draft. However, suddenly, they added Russell Wilson, who had previously visited the Giants. Looking at their QB room now, the Giants definitely look sorted, right? But The Athletic’s Dianna Russini has some other thoughts in her mind. Let’s just say she has a warning for the Big Blues.

On her latest episode of the Scoop City podcast, Russini pointed out some drawbacks of the Giants’ QBs next season. Leaving out DeVito completely from her conversation. Russini focused on the idea of Winston and Wilson as potential starters next season. First, she imagined Winston starting in the Big Apple and how it could pan out. “You have Jameis, who’s just going to chuck it and throw the ball around and probably throw a lot of interceptions, right?” Russini shared.

Honestly, you just never know what’s gonna come out of Winston’s arm. Last season, he threw for only 2,121 yards, 13 TDs and a whopping 12 INTs. He even led the game with 5.2% turnover-worthy throws, averaging 1.5 such play per game. So, there’s obviously that risk of turnovers by starting Winston. Now, there’s the case of Wilson. Russini believes, “Russ, who I would argue holds the ball too long, isn’t great in the middle of the field, right? Has been accused of taking too many sacks. Not even accused. Factually, he’s taken too many.”

Umm!! Russini is yet again bang-on with her claim. Russell Wilson isn’t DangeRuss anymore. At 36, he is a shadow of his Seattle days. Ever since he left the Seahawks, Wilson has never looked like a starter. In Denver, he took 100 sacks in just two seasons for holding the ball too long. Russ has failed to show he has those legs that once led the Seahawks to Super Bowl XXII in his new home, the MetLife Stadium. Living off past glories, Russ might be a future Hall of Famer. But can he be the Giants’ answer to the QB room? Well, that’s difficult to foresee.

Actually, not that difficult. It’s clear as a day sky that Wilson is just here to warm that QB spot. So, when the time comes, he can pass on the torch to the Giants’ future signal-caller.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Russell Wilson still lead a team, or is he just a placeholder for the Giants?

Russell Wilson’s time as a Giant may not be what he envisions

“I expect to be the starter,” Wilson said as soon as he touched down in New York. It’s clear he isn’t even bothered about Winston’s status as a possible starter ahead of them. But the real problem for Russ lies elsewhere. It’s the No.3 draft pick the Giants still have on their hands. Their former player Isaiah Stanback predicts the Giants aren’t going to pass on the prospect of still drafting a QB. “I think that if they’re in a position to get a quarterback in the draft, they’re still going to take it,” Stanback shared.

But the real question is: Can they? See, it’s only a matter of time before the Titans use their No.1 pick on Cam Ward. After they visited Miami’s Pro Day, where Ward was flexing his passes to the Titans’ front office. Ward is already betrothed to Music City. Then comes Shedeur Sanders. The Browns still have the No.2 pick and Kenny Pickett as a possible starter. So, are they really going to pass on the idea of drafting someone like Shedeur Sanders? Well, chances are pretty slim.

Now, the only way the Giants could probably get either Ward or Sanders is through trading up. But yet again, are the Titans and Browns willing to give up their cards? Probably not. Still, it’s not sunshine and rainbows for Russ in New York. Apart from Ward and Sanders, there are a lot of other QBs. Like Quinn Ewers, Jalen Milroe, or Jaxson Dart, either of them could be a G-Men pretty soon. And if it does happen, then Wilson’s job would probably go from a starter to a benchwarmer come 2026.
