Three games, three wins— the Pittsburgh Steelers are on a roll. But things didn’t look so good three weeks ago when Russell Wilson was injured and ruled out. So when Justin Fields was brought in as the starting quarterback and rose to the occasion, people anticipated a rivalry among them and it seems Wilson just confirmed it via his social media celebration.
Russell Wilson celebrated the team’s 20-10 victory against the Los Angeles Chargers on his Instagram stories and tagged a few of his teammates: Dan Moore Jr., Spencer Anderson, Zach Frazier, and James Daniels. Wilson shared the images from the Steelers’s official Instagram account.
But one person’s tag was missing in Wilson’s story. It was Justin Fields. Yes, there were a few other players who were missing as well, but what makes the whole thing interesting about Fields’s name being missed is the fact that he and Wilson have a fierce rivalry going on.

What’s more interesting is that the 35-year-old never tags Fields on his stories or talks about him in interviews. The fact that the Steelers went 3-0 with only three touchdowns this year with the help of Fields— they are the first team in 36 years to pull off this kind of quirk. And that’s got to pinch Wilson.
However, last week, when the Steelers won against the Broncos, Fields called it revenge for Wilson. The team even gave him a petty ball. At the time, it looked like both had a good camaraderie. “I think we all know Russ got kind of did dirty last year. So I know he wished he could have played today in this game, but it’s awesome getting a win for him. He got a petty game ball,” Fields has shared. But, things seem to have changed in a week.
But hey, something else could be going on as well. Now, everyone has been talking about the team’s defense. After all, they allowed just 26 points and forced six turnovers in three games. So it is possible that via his IG story, Wilson was trying to cheer up the offense for their contribution too, and hence, tagged a selected few players.

Even though the Steelers are recording wins, there’s one glaring question that remains: Will Russ return as QB1 now that Fields has very well proved himself deserving of the role?
Can Russell Wilson displace Justin Fields?

Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and former QB Dan Orlovsky praised Justin Fields a few days back. Both said that he was doing great and carrying out the plans meticulously on the field. While Smith didn’t say anything about Russell Wilson taking the number 1 role once he’s fit, Orlovsky had said that Fields should be the starting quarterback if he wins the Chargers game. He did and scales are tilted heavily on his side.
Even Steeler Nation wants him to play as the starting QB. After the game, the team posted photos of players from both teams with the caption, “Game recognize game.”
Before the season, Fields only seemed like a backup for the veteran quarterback. But the last three games have pushed him into the spotlight. With 55 of 75 passes (73.3% completion rate) for 518 yards and 2 touchdowns, he has done enough for himself. His hard work is amplified in the three wins. While Russell Wilson doesn’t need a comparison with more than 40k yards in his career, his rising age poses a problem.

The internal struggles are there, but Bill Belichick is convinced that the Steelers are in a great position with regard to their QBs. “Everyone’s worried about the Pittsburgh quarterback situation, they might have the best one in the league. They have an experienced guy coming behind Fields if you need him, but they’re playing well as a team. But, again, a long way to go,” Belichick opined on the Pat McAfee Show.
It looks like Russell Wilson’s comeback to the number 1 position wouldn’t be easy. Fields has impressed everyone with his performance, but we reckon the next few days will be full of surprises. What do you think?
