Russell Wilson honored—Is he the most underrated QB in the NFL right now?

Russell Wilson might finally be getting the prestige he ever wanted! Mr. Unlimited signed a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers in March, paying him a minimum of $1.21 million for the 2024 season. However, his game was put to the test by coach Mike Tomlin because of the two main QBs on the roster.

As expected from him, Wilson surpassed Justin Fields in becoming the starter for the team, days after the preseason final. However, that’s not the only boon he amassed in his storied tenure so far. Head coach Mike Tomlin also gave him another role, keeping him on his star players’ list.

The Steelers quarterback, Russell Wilson, shared a story on his official Instagram account on August 2, 2024. To clarify, it’s not just a story; it’s an acknowledgment of what he has currently received from the new team and the coach. Yes! Seven months after becoming the QB for the franchise, the Steelers have made him one of four captains for the season. He shares this captaincy role with three other Steel Men – DT Cameron Heyward, safety Miles Killebrew, and LB T.J. Watt. While sharing the poster of “Steelers 2024 Captains,” an emotional Wilson wrote, “I’m grateful to serve and lead with such incredible teammates. It’s a true honor.”

This list was actually made by his teammates and coach Tomlin for the 2024 season. To share in the delight, Wilson’s story was also re-posted by the three captains as well on their respective IG accounts. This clearly conveys the fact that Wilson has been making his mark on the team since the start, as Killebrew also praised the quarterback’s leadership, saying, “He’s a strong leader, and he brings veteran experience. He’s been doing it at a high level for a long time and I think with that experience [he] kind of calms nerves, and he can lead guys through various situations because he’s seen it. He’s seen a lot, so just a calming presence, I would say.”

After his arguably poor stint with the Broncos, marked by an 11-19 record and a reported dispute with former coach Sean Payton, Wilson’s new roles as captain and QB1 have certainly restored his belief in the Steelers–just as the team and Tomlin have instilled their faith in him.

Have an interesting take?

It seems ever since Russell Wilson entered Pittsburgh, everyone, including coach Mike Tomlin, has loved his presence and prowess. This time again, after Wilson proved his worth in the camps and in the last preseason game, Tomlin took no extra time to reveal his QB 1. This is evident from his recent statements about the 35-year-old quarterback, where he mentioned, “Russ’ resume is a unique one in terms of lift and success, and that tends to play a factor in the decision-making, but not from a decision-maker’s perspective. It’s just the fruit of his labor. He’s seen a lot and done a lot, and I think it was reflected in the way he played and conducted himself.

In his final preseason game, Wilson was on fire. He needed just five plays to drive the offense down the field. And he completed both of his passes for “26 yards, including a key 32-yard strike to George Pickens on third-and-11.” Even after a previous pass to Pickens lost 6 yards, Wilson stayed cool under pressure. Then, just two plays later, “Cordarrelle Patterson smashed through the defense for a 31-yard touchdown.” On the other hand, “rookie center Zach Frazier and left guard Isaac Seumalo also provided perfect blocks,” opening up the lanes. It was a team effort that showed just how well Wilson and his new teammates are coming together.

Hence as the team believes in Russell Wilson, he is now selected as the Steelers captain for the first time. What do you make of Wilson’s captaincy? Let us know in the comments section below.
