Is Russell Wilson right in claiming Ciara deserves a Super Bowl halftime show over Kendrick Lamar?

The Drake-Kendrick Lamar feud. It’s been as intense as the rivalry between the Lombardi Trophy and every team other than the Chiefs for the past two years. The rap feud may have started over a decade ago, but things started getting heated again, especially after Lamar released ‘Like That’ in response to Drake’s ‘First Person Shooting.’ And somehow, it’s looking increasingly likely that the NFL will become the site for the next chapter in their rivalry.

More specifically, the Super Bowl. Interestingly (or ironically), in ‘First Person Shooting,’ apart from suggesting that Kendrick Lamar isn’t one of the GOATs (“Who the GOAT?… it’s just [Drake] and Cole.”), Drake and J Cole mention how they’re as “big as the Super Bowl.” Well, less than a year later, Kendrick Lamar hit back without actually having to make a statement. That was because the NFL announced he would be headlining the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show!

With the rapper set to make his Super Bowl return on February 9, 2025, though, it looks like Russell Wilson already has a guest artist in mind. And it’s none other than his wife, Ciara! Almost every year, the Halftime Show headliner(s) brings out special guests on stage to make the ordeal even more memorable. For Super Bowl LVIII, as R&B icon Usher headlined the event, Alicia Keys and will.i.am joined him. And after Ciara’s recent performance in Riyadh, her husband isn’t the only one who thinks she should be in New Orleans.

Started in 2019, Riyadh Season is a series of entertainment, cultural, and sporting events held in the Saudi Arabian capital. This year, Ciara headlined the Opening Ceremony, and, as expected, she put on a show for the ages. Combining the emotions of R&B music with her electrifying dance moves in perfect harmony, Ciara proved why she’s one of the biggest artists in that genre in the music industry. And from Russell Wilson’s reaction, it was evident he thought so, too!

The Steelers quarterback’s Instagram story featured a couple of Ciara videos that had the crowd “buzzing, calling it Super Bowl-worthy! Her energy was unmatched, making it a night to remember for everyone there.” Russell Wilson took to the comment section of Local Riyadh’s Instagram post and reacted with fire emojis. It looked apt for the moment, considering it was his wife’s Riyadh Season debut.

Another video showed the superstar singer performing her iconic song 1,2 Step.’ If Missy Elliott had been there, it would have been even more special. But that didn’t matter to Wilson because his wife’s stage presence and talent were enough for him to make a demand to the NFL. Tagging the NFL on his Instagram story, he wrote, “Super Bowl performance.” But fanboy Russell didn’t stop there.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Russell Wilson right in claiming Ciara deserves a Super Bowl halftime show over Kendrick Lamar?

Have an interesting take?

When Ciara posted her performance on Instagram, writing, “Riyadh Opening Ceremony! Wow! This was one for the books! Thanks for the incredible love you showed us🤘🏽🫶🏽,” the quarterback couldn’t help but show his support there, too! He commented, “🔥🔥🔥 Crazy Good! Best in the World 🌍” And he wasn’t alone. Most of her fans alluded to Ciara’s performance being Super Bowl-level!

“This is a Super Bowl Performance 🔥🔥🔥,” wrote one of them, while another appreciated her stage presence. “This performance is Super Bowl level. You worked every inch of this stage. 🙏🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥” Remember how we said it’s common for headliners to bring guest artists on stage during the Halftime Show? Well, Ciara’s fans believe she’s a performer like no other: “Literally could carry the whole Super Bowl Halftime without a single guest star😭😭😭”

Well, as of now, the 38-year-old doesn’t have a trip to New Orleans on her calendar. But who knows? Maybe Russell Wilson and the fans’ continued demand to give Ciara the opportunity to perform at the Super Bowl might actually work. But until then, at least we can be sure that Kendrick Lamar will be there to put on a show! Could Patrick Mahomes potentially have his “Big Me” moment with the writer of that lyric?

We might see Patrick Mahomes with Kendrick Lamar at Super Bowl LIX

Do you remember what Patrick Mahomes did at the ring ceremony earlier this year? Having won his third Super Bowl in four years – at the age of 28! – the Chiefs quarterback posted a picture where he showed off the three diamond-encrusted rings. His caption? “BIG ME,” quoted straight from Lamar’s ‘Like That.’

That lyric was a direct response to Drake leaving Lamar out of the “Big 3” alongside himself and J Cole in First Person Shooting.’ While Mahomes may not have necessarily meant anything in particular by using that lyric, it could be possible that he was indirectly saying that he is the GOAT. He may be only 29 right now, but he’s achieved much more than many other, more experienced players in the NFL have.

That said, Mahomes and the Chiefs are going for a three-peat this season, and seeing how they’ve started their campaign (going 6-0 in the first 6 games), they could very well be heading to yet another Super Bowl. And if that happens, we could see an interaction between Mahomes and Kendrick Lamar.

As for the rapper, back in 2022, he took the stage at halftime during Super Bowl LVI. Come 2025, he will perform at the Caesars Superdome, and the setlist is out. Mona Lisa,’ ‘All the Stars,’ ‘Not Like Us,’ and ‘m.A.Ad. city’ are some of the tracks that you can expect to hear on the day of the Super Bowl next year. That said, could we potentially also see Ciara join Lamar on stage? What do you think?
