Will Russell Wilson be the Giants’ starting QB? Things got interesting in New York as they made it official on Tuesday that they are signing the ex-Steelers QB on a one-year deal. Wilson became the second QB to sign with the Giants this offseason after the team signed up Jameis Winston on March 21. The interesting question is, who is getting the QB1 spot, Winston or Wilson? The former Super Bowl winner with the Seahawks is not shy about his expectations. At his introductory press conference, Russ said, “I expect to be the starter.” But with Jameis in the mix, there could be some competition.

Interestingly, Russell also opened up about his feelings for one of the WRs on the team. The NY Giants’ official IG page welcomed Russell Wilson to the team with multiple posts. The team also posted a clip from his introductory press conference where he talks about WR Malik Nabers. “I love Malik, man, just watching him and his personality on the field, his demeanor,” said the QB. Nabers, 21, made his NFL debut last season. Russ mentioned watching a clip of Malik where he was pretty impressed by one of his catches “against the Commanders on a shallow cross.

Malik, who also made it to the Pro Bowl in 2024, set a record for the most receptions by a rookie receiver in a single season (109). The LSU alum racked up 1,204 receiving yards with 7 TDs in 15 games. “The competitor, the warrior that he is, there’s a lot of guys like that…And that kind of thing is what championship football looks like,” added Russ.

The NY Giants captioned the video, “Russ doesn’t have to just watch Malik anymore 😌,” playfully hinting at the QB’s excitement to team up with the standout WR. While Wilson is excited about teaming up with the Giants, there are still whispers about his recent departure.

Russell Wilson’s Giants signing: A move he didn’t want?

Remember when Pete Carroll was announced as the HC of the Raiders, and Russ was asked about joining the team? Wilson made his priorities clear that he wanted to remain with the Steelers. The QB said, “Pete’s going to be a great coach, obviously. He’s great at what he does. But I’m focused on the Steelers.” The 36-year-old, after the regular season, mentioned many times that he wanted to do more with the Steelers.

The rumors of Pittsburgh not moving ahead with the QB were on the rolls right after they lost in the wild card round. “I’m looking forward to hopefully going back to the Steelers, and we’ll see what happens with the rest. I love it in Pittsburgh,” Wilson said in an interview with Associated Press. But the Steelers were of the view that the 36-year-old is “physically done.” And they never truly tried to bring Wilson back, despite him publicly admitting that he wants to continue with the team.

Have an interesting take?

ESPN reporter Adam Schefter reported that the Super Bowl champion QB “spent about six hours” last week at the Steelers building meeting different people from the organization. And that he was waiting till the last minute to re-sign with the Steelers. But it was after no positive response from them that Wilson finally decided to move on with the Giants.

Pittsburgh reportedly mentioned earlier that they were going to retain at least one of Wilson or Justin Fields. But they lost both to New York, Fields to the Jets and Russ to John Mara‘s Giants. Now, the Steelers are still in a serious QB crisis. On March 13, they signed Mason Rudolph on a two-year deal worth $8 million. This will be Mason’s second stint with the team, but he is less likely to be the starting QB. The word around is that Pittsburgh is still waiting for a response from Aaron Rodgers.

After Russ signed with the Giants, Rodgers also has the Steelers as his only option at the moment. The question, perhaps, then becomes whether the 41-year-old wants to wear Steelers colors or hang up his cleats. Either way, 36-year-old Wilson can now start preparing for 2025 with a clear mind.
