Russell Wilson sitting out—smart move for his career longevity or a letdown for fans?

When Russell Wilson joined the Pittsburgh Steelers early this year, he revealed that he had a five-year plan for his NFL career. This year was important for him. And he knows it. Mr Unlimited pushed himself during the training camp and injured his right calf while pushing the sled. It has put his future in jeopardy.

Steelers open their season against the Falcons on the 8th of September. But the Super Bowl winner’s calf has not fully healed. He said after the practice session on September 6, “I didn’t do much, only a couple things. I’m doing everything I can.” But that might not be enough. Clouds of doubt shroud Wilson’s availability in the season opener. Not the news Steeler Nation wanted to hear. But HC Mike Tomlin gave us a hint one day before.

Speaking to reporters after practice on the 5th of September, Tomlin said that Wilson had a tightness in that same right calf. He further added that the medical team would conduct certain tests to evaluate the physical condition. While offensive coordinator Arthur Smith didn’t comment on the quarterback’s condition, Wilson’s admission of lingering injury has brought a fresh problem for them.

We know what you are thinking. If not him, then who? In the absence of veteran QB, Justin Fields is the obvious choice. When the coach announced Wilson as the starting quarterback, he praised both of them for bring professional players. Tomlin even said that the decision was difficult in a positive way for the team. Well, the time has come now.

Wilson missed many sessions during the training camp, but looked fine. Out of the blue, the situation has come out again.

While Wilson looks set to be benched, all hopes are on Fields to take the center stage. He is also ready. After the first-choice QB was reported to no play, Fields said, “I have the same process, every week. I learned my rookie year how fast things can change. So I always prepare like I’m a starter.” That’s very good. Steeler Nation is looking unto him. Without these two, there isn’t much left in the quarterback department.

The 3rd and final QB is Kyle Allen. He is in the league for the last 6 seasons but hasn’t played much. In his 30 games so far, Allen has only 4,734 passing yards with 441 out of 704 passes. His record also isn’t very inspiring, with only wins in 19 games when he played as a starting quarterback.
