At 5 ft 11 in, almost everyone had doubts about Russell Wilson playing QB. Hell, they wouldn’t have even imagined half of the success Wilson was going to have under center. Super Bowl Champion, 10-Pro Bowls, and about 14 years in the NFL, Wilson has come a long way from silencing his doubters. Of course, he has done everything to be a future Hall of Famer using his gridiron glories. However, Wilson just didn’t have enough to be a two-sport star he was once. If not for the gridiron, he could have had a career in the diamond. But fate had some other plans for him. So, now Wilson could actually get his wish fulfilled—no, not by himself. Through his stepson, Future, who Wilson feels has all the traits to succeed in MLB.
Wilson took Future to the 2025 Pro Bowl games, where they spent time practicing on the gridiron. But it seems Future’s destiny lies away from the gridiron. Today, Wilson was a proud dad, seeing Future’s growth as a baseball player. He shared a snap from his son’s baseball game where he had a Yankees uniform on. “Young Baller. Love seeing you shine! Grateful for moments like these at the Ballpark Together. Next Jeter? ⚾️🏟️ @Yankees @MLB.”

So, Yankees take a note because you might have a future star growing in Wilson’s family. Football might be the No.1 sport in the family, but baseball seems to have a lot of affection too. Actually seeing Future grow up to be a baseballer isn’t surprising, considering Wilson once had a brief stint as a baseballer. Yes, there was a chance we might have got Wilson standing at second base with a glove on his hand instead of football under center.
I mean, he even earned praise from Colorado Rockies GM Bill Schmidt, who used to be the team’s head of scouting at one time. He described Wilson as “okay” at second base, needed to work with his bad, but overall, he had passion and a great work ethic. However, it wasn’t meant to be as Wilson, who used to play both baseball and football at NC State, as he couldn’t continue his career on the diamond. Only playing two seasons with the Rockies, with some solid on-base numbers and questionable batting average, Wilson somewhat gave up baseball when he moved to Wisconsin, where he got the starting role as a QB from day 1.
Well, the rest is history. However, Wilson could still make an impact in MLB while teaming up with his wife, Ciara. No, not from the field anymore, but definitely away from it.
Russell Wilson’s Portland project just received some homerun news
It’s been almost 7 years since Wilson and Ciara announced their involvement in the Portland Diamond Project. At that time, the couple announced, “A new team is on the horizon. Today I am honored to announce that Ciara and I are part owners of the Portland Diamond Project. We’re aiming to bring a Major League Baseball team to Portland.” Well, after years of stagnancy in the PDP. Wilson finally received the homerun he was waiting for.

A 32,000-seat stadium to get this diamond project moving. So, basically, it’s PDP that announced their intention to purchase Zidell Yards, where they could build this stadium. Then PDP founder Craig Cheek wrote to incite more excitement among MLB fans in Portland, “Portland will have professional baseball in the heart of the city, along one of Oregon’s most iconic rivers.” This MLB expansion to Portland could rope in $1B as per early sources. So, obviously the city’s mayor Keith Wilson is already excited about this project’s future, “We need a project like this now.”
For a city with a metro population of 3M, this project could bring heaps of revenue and new investments. Because in Jay Zidell’s words, “Who wouldn’t want to watch baseball with the Willamette River as the backdrop?” It’s an ambitious vision, to be honest. But not something impossible. With a bit of Wilson and Ciara’s sporting flair, Portland may get its MLB team sooner rather than later. And of course, don’t be surprised if Future plays in Portland if he does become an MLB star. What better way to start your career on the diamond than to play for the team your father had a hand in building? Simply generational!!!
