Roger Goodell has always strived to make the NFL a global sport and he doesn’t plan to stop any time soon either. He’s spent 45 years in the league and 21 of those have been as the NFL commissioner. Though the game has become a bit injury-prone recently, the teams’ evaluations and international presence have shot up tenfold.
But before his contract comes to an end in 2027, Goodell has sworn to make sure that the billion-dollar NFL empire is known internationally. His job entails a lot of hard work. And with that hard work, his net worth shot up by a significant amount. So much so that even the highest-paid athletes in the league, like Joe Burrow for instance, cannot compete with what the commissioner makes.
In a way, it makes sense because Goodell has been looking after the league for the past 21 years. He has signed 4 extensions in his career so far (2009, 2012, 2017, and Oct. 2023). His latest extension entitles him to stay at command till at least March 2027. Throughout the years, Goodell has accumulated an astonishing net worth of about $250 million, which is about 4 times more than the highest-paid player in the league.

An article from ESPN suggested that Burrow is making about $63 million, which is the highest 3-year APY. Goodell reportedly makes nearly the same figure in a year. What’s more interesting is that Goodell’s net worth is early 4 times more than Burrow’s salary and even other players like Justin Herbert ($53.3 mil APY), Lamar Jackson ($52 mil), and even Jalen Hurts ($51 mil).
This boost was a result of international promotion of the sport, through media deals from the respective countries, tickets, and even merch sales. The efforts to capitalize markets outside the USA have been nothing but fruitful. But the commissioner doesn’t intend to stop just yet.
Reaching this point has not been easy by any means. Goodell mentioned that he still has a lot of work to do. “We will see what the future holds,” Goodell said to ESPN. “Other than that, over the next three years, I’m going to bust my butt.” That result is apparent because something interesting just happened in the NFL.
The NFL is maximizing its global presence
Recently, the NFL announced its 2024 season offshore plans to the public in an Instagram post. Many countries will be hosting NFL games this year namely Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Austria, France, and New Zealand. The NFL is venturing into Asia this time around as well. Countries like South Korea, Japan, and China will host LA Rams games this year around.

Goodell has been responsible for a significant boost in teams’ net worth over the years. Only recently, the Washington Commanders sold for a record $6.5 billion earlier this year. Hopefully, there’s a lot more to come before this tenure expires to allow the NFL to etch its name in the global history.
