The league is very hard on anything that spoils its image. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has assembled people who work very hard on this, carefully reviewing the game footage and any comments that paint the league in a poor light. However, they made a very grave error after the divisional game between the Chiefs and Texans. And it got a robust response from the former Texans great, JJ Watt.
Pro Football Talk revealed that the league fined the Texans RB Joe Mixon $25,000 for something he didn’t say. JJ Watt also pointed to this and wrote in his tweet, “This has not received enough attention. He got fined for something he didn’t say. Publicly complained about it (correctly). Then got fined for that. What are we doing here?” That was a brave reaction. Though Mixon was fined for something similar, Watts spoke his heart out in a rebellious tone.

Publicly complained about it (correctly).
Then got fined for that.

That indeed is a double punishment. According to the league, Mixon said after losing the divisional game, “Why play the game if every 50/50 call goes with Chiefs? These officials are trash and biased.” But they were completely wrong there. The Texans RB hadn’t uttered these words.
Instead, it was a tweet by the former Bengals receiver, TJ Houshmandzadeh after the game. But Roger Goodell lost all the support by not listening to the Texans’ complaint about the double punishment of Joe Mixon. His agent, Peter Schaffer, already indicated that they would appeal against the decision. And going by the scenario, they would easily win.
Fans also joined the bandwagon against the NFL and started trolling the NFL. Roger Goodell must not be happy with this. But they also need to ensure they pick the correct information.
Fans influenced by JJ Watt to troll the NFL
While one fan stated that the NFL commissioner will begin the process to salvage the league’s reputation, they were seeing everything with their own eyes as he wrote, “Now begins the process of damage control from the NFL league officials & Roger Goodell.” But another fan made a more severe warning, claiming, he would boycott the Super Bowl by mentioning, “I’m a diehard football fan, and I’m not going to bother watching the Super Bowl if KC is in it.”

Time to fine players and coaches.
Time to circle the wagons and put out multiple statements that America doesn’t really understand what they’ve been seeing with their own eyes all season— RLatimer (@RLatimer6) January 22, 2025

Not only JJ Watt, but many other legends like Troy Aikman and Terry Bradshaw have sparked rumors that the league is biased toward the Chiefs. Another fan had a similar reaction to this incident and tweeted, “The nfl is now fining people for saying the obvious truth-so post-modern, Roger.”
The anger was building up for a long time inside the fans. But the NFL did nothing about that. So, it has turned towards Roger Goodell. One fan claimed it was a money-minting scheme and wrote, “Roger loves money more than he loves himself.” But another fan just summed up their feelings in a 4-word message that was, “Goodell needs to go…”
