Should the Jets gamble on Rex Ryan again, or is it time for fresh leadership?

The New York Jets are undoubtedly facing some serious trouble this season. Aaron Rodgers is coming out as arguably a flop quarterback of the season, with just 3 wins in 11 games. The franchise’s owner Woody Johnson tried to save the team by firing coach Robert Saleh, besides wanting to bench the quarterback.

However, everything seems to be falling apart even under interim coach Jeff Ulbrich. So, what’s next? Well, for now, a new proposal to coach the team has come in from Rex Ryan, who coached the Jets from 2009 to 2014. So, should Gang Green move forward with Ryan next year? If you ask former NFL player Rodney Harrison, he would probably say no!

During a recent appearance on Sunday Night Football at NBC, Harrison joined Mike Florio to react to Rex Ryan’s recent plea to coach Woody Johnson’s Jets. He said, “I’ve always loved Rex Ryan. I love the passion and enthusiasm and just him. And what he can do as far as motivating players, him as a defensive coordinator, but to me, my take is a little bit different.

Explaining his take, the former safety said,I’m going after Ben Johnson, offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. And I’m going to tell you what I want to do before I’m going to go after him, I’m trying to trade for Hendon Hooker, the backup quarterback of the Detroit Lions.” Yes! The ex-NFLer wants owner Woody Johnson to raid the Detroit Lions and hire Ben Johnson as their new HC as well as the present-backup quarterback Hooker.

But why did he say so? Well, it’s because Harrison thinks Hooker is immensely talented. He had seen him playing in college. According to him, this QB is like the hidden gem in the NFL which the Lions are keeping safe. He pointed out Hooker’s strong college career at Tennessee, emphasizing his maturity, leadership, and exceptional arm strength. Well, it’s true! Hooker is actually high school’s all-time leading passer with, via NCAA, “6,027 passing yards and 55 passing touchdowns while rushing for 2,975 yards and 48 touchdowns.” Hence, according to Harrison, Hooker’s accuracy, speed, and health make him a better option than highly touted prospects like Caleb Williams or Bo Nix.

On the other hand, Coach Johnson has led the Lions to great offensive success in each of his two seasons. For instance, last season, the team’s offense ranked third with an average of 394.7 yards per game. In addition to that, Johnson has been coaching Hooker, and hence, they both can bring double success to the Jets, if they are hired. That’s the reason why Harrison wants the duo to come to the Jets, despite Rex Ryan’s plea to save Aaron Rodgers’s career.

Rex Ryan is confident of bringing success to Woody Johnson’s Jets?

Have an interesting take?

The Jets currently are sitting in third place in the AFC East with 3 wins. They need someone who can push them higher. Owner Woody Johnson is arguably frustrated and looking for a new coach. This is after Jeff Ulbrich failed to keep his promise. Hence, using this opportunity well, Rex Ryan made an offer. Ryan, who previously coached the Jets for five years, as well as even won the Super Bowl XXXV as defensive line coach for the Ravens thinks the Jets still can do better.

While speaking to the media, he said, “We’re going to blow the opponents up. There’s way too much talent on this team to play the way we’ve been playing… Nobody has seen a team going to play as hard as this team is going to play in the future. Trust me if I’m the guy. Trust me. And that’s going to be it. That’s what’s going to separate me from all these other guys you’re going to bring in. Your Grudens your whoever, whatever. Give me a break. They ain’t New York Jets. I’m all about the Jets.

Ryan has previously coached quarterbacks like Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, and Tyrod Taylor. Hence, he thinks he could save Aaron Rodgers’s ship from drowning.
