Is Russell Wilson's future with the Steelers in jeopardy due to rival coaching tactics?

The tide for “Mr. Unlimited” turned very quickly after he suffered a calf injury during training. Now the former Super Bowl winner is on the bench and has certainly lost the “Pole Position” he was offered at Pittsburgh. After watching Mike Tomlin lend credence to Justin Fields as he led the Steelers to the AFC North, Russell Wilson might feel some type of way.

Mike Tomlin still doesn’t feel “any blink in Justin” after they lost to the Indianapolis Colts by a mere 3 points. The Steelers HC is not budging from letting “Justin singularly focused on starting.” The Steelers are hosting the Cowboys in week 5 and this was the perfect time for Jason Garrett, the former Cowboys HC, to give his take on the Steelers QB controversy.

Garrett met Art Rooney at the Steelers facility, talked to a lot of people, and had a major takeaway. Everyone in the building respects coach Mike T, the Steelers’ history, and their traditions. That’s what makes the Steelers great. That’s also the reason why he thinks Justin Fields will thrive in the Steelers, simply because Coach T respects him and backs him.

Mike Florio picked Garrett’s brain on how Mike Tomlin is handling the QB situation. The former Cowboys coach thinks that Tomlin is doing an excellent job of it. “I think he’s handled it beautifully,” said Garrett on Pro Football Talk. Moreover, he thinks that Mike Tomlin is “1,000%” behind Justin Fields.

“They had an issue with quarterbacks, they didn’t feel good about where they were going and as an organization, they got together and said, ‘We need to address this.’ Address it two ways: Russell Wilson…Justin Fields…. Have them come in, compete. Russell’s the incumbent and then he has a calf injury, he’s not able to go. Justin Fields is the quarterback and they’re behind him, 1,000%, creating an environment for him to be successful,” Jason Garrett further added.

Why fix something that isn’t broken? Fields helped them win three games in a row. He didn’t play great in first game, but the other three were something to watch. FYI his passer rating has been on the rise since the season opener against ATL. He started from 91.9 passer rating and is sitting at 104.0. Even after the 27-24 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Though the team lost, Fields had a field day, throwing 312 yards with a nearly 65% completion rate. He threw a touchdown and rushed for two more in the third and fourth quarters of the game. That’s not all, #2 has only thrown one pick this season. No wonder Mike Tomlin wants him to be QB1. But how does it look on Russell Wilson? He was promised the QB1 spot, and the Pittsburgh Steelers deprived him of that.

Have an interesting take?

Wilson was kitted out in the season opener against Atlanta but didn’t play. Maybe he thought he was going to start the game. But here we are. Minds begs to know what Russell Wilson’s reaction would be and when will the water be over the bridge.

Will Russell Wilson eventually request a trade from the Steelers?

LeAnn Lowman of Steeler Nation, “Wilson will supposedly be healthy enough to play second-string quarterback in the Week 5 game against the Dallas Cowboys.” Ouch! That might hurt Russell Wilson. However, she pointed out how Wilson has been “himself like he is running for mayor, out shaking hands and kissing babies.”

He’s going to the Pittsburgh Pirates and Penguins game with his wife, Ciara. He’s doing charity work in Pittsburgh and making efforts to come off as an ideal teammate. Lowman’s story revolves around former NFL GM Doug Whaley’s appearance on the 93.7 The Fan Morning Show. There, Whaley talked about how he thinks the 9x Pro Bowl QB can handle the situation in one of two ways.

“That is another reason why I’m excited to see how he does. Because does he toe the party line? Does he keep up with the Russ image of, ‘I am a team player. I’m here to be the best teammate I can. If that means me being the starter, great; if that means being the backup, I’m going to support Justin.’ Because that’s the aura he’s built around himself with all the tweets and the other stuff, or does he go anti, all scorched earth,” Whaley said on the radio show.

‘Scorched earth?’ It’s a bit extreme and it indicates Wilson going rogue on the Steelers and “leaking” his dissatisfaction through his team. He called the Broncos out for benching him and brought up his injury guarantees as a reason. That was on live TV. If at some point Wilson gets frustrated, would he air out his discontent in public again? We’re not sure.  However, Wilson not getting the job he was promised might force him to seek other options.
