Can Andy Reid's 'jolly' persona be the secret weapon behind the Chiefs' success?

Perhaps Andy Reid is an enigma in the league currently after Bill Belichick! This statement is evident due to two contradictory revelations that were made on Tuesday, July 16. In the Scoop City’s debut episode, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini and former NFL QB Chase Daniel co-hosted the show wherein they revealed Andy Reid’s two sides of his personality. Russini informed her viewers that they both flew to Kansas City and met the coach to talk about everything related to his team, KC, Taylor Swift, and a lot more.

While revealing her topic of discussion, the journalist said, “His [Reid] whole vibe was so just Jolly, you know like everyone around the league says to me, he’s [Bill] Belichick just a little happier.” However, that was one side of the great Super Bowl coach. Chiming in further, Patrick Mahomes’ predecessor, Chase Daniel also shared an interesting story of the 66-year-old, which revealed his other side, a tough side.

Daniel recalled one incident when Reid got really upset with him. He revealed, “It’s the only time in the history of me playing with Coach Reid that he really like ripped me a new one like I was a little bit scared.” In 2014, during training camp, the team was having a two-minute drill meeting before a game. Alex Smith, who usually led these discussions, wasn’t playing, so Chase Daniel, who was starting, took over and started explaining plays and signals to the team.

Daniel recalled that Kansas City Chiefs‘ coach Andy Reid didn’t say anything during the meeting, so Daniel thought everything was fine. However, later in a smaller meeting room with the other quarterbacks and coaches, Reid burst in angrily. He scolded Daniel for taking over the meeting, saying the team wasn’t bigger than any one player and that Daniel shouldn’t have overstepped his role.

The former NFL QB revealed that he was shocked and scared, fearing he might get cut from the team. But he admitted that after the incident, he called Doug Peterson to seek clarity on the matter. And in response, Doug explained that Reid didn’t like how Daniel took over without permission. So, in order to right the wrongs, Daniel called his coach Reid, who later reassured him, saying, “Dude you’re good. Just don’t do it again. Bye.” A mix of relief and confusion took over Daniel.

Well it’s true that Reid can be harsh when it comes to his team. He even punishes his arguably favorite quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, when he doesn’t throw deep.

Even Patrick Mahomes isn’t excused!

Have an interesting take?

Patrick Mahomes initially made waves in the NFL as the Chiefs starting quarterback with his exceptional deep-ball passing. In his first season, he led the league with “75 completions of 20 or more yards and attempted 88 such passes, completing 36.” But, according to TruMedia, since 2019, Mahomes average throw distance and deep pass rate have steadily decreased. By last season, his average pass distance was nearly three yards shorter than in his debut season.

Recognizing the need to utilize Mahomes’ deep-passing abilities more effectively, Coach Andy Reid has a special way to reintroduce a deep-ball threat for Mahomes. As per the reports, Reid punished Mahomes, asking him to throw deep more often during practices. The quarterback mentioned that Reid playfully punishes him to take more deep shots. And he can’t escape that. He is committed to making those throws. The 3x Super Bowl champ expressed, “If I don’t, he throws little jabs at me like, ‘Oh, you want to throw the checkdown here?’ I’m like, ‘I got you, Coach; we’re going to push it.’ It has been fun.”

It is true that more frequent deep throws would better harness Mahomes’ exceptional skills, as he is going to enter the 2024 season for 3-peat.
