Can Xavier Worthy prove Bengals CB wrong and show size doesn't matter in the NFL?

Ahead of week 2 battle, the pressure is building up. Players are engaging in tactics to play with the minds of rivals. The prime example is the Bengals vs the Chiefs. While the back-to-back Super Bowl champions have started the season on a winning note, the Bungles still need a win after losing the season opener.

While talking to the reporters after the Wednesday practice, Bengals’ CB Cam Taylor-Britt mocked the Chiefs’ rookie WR Xavier Worthy on his size. The newcomer made headlines with a touchdown on his very first touch of the ball in the NFL. The CB said, “He can run straight, he can run jet sweeps, can’t do too much else, so that is about it. I feel like if you put your hands on him, he’s only a hundred-something pounds, you’ll stop his speed.

He is right there. Worthy’s size has been the talk of the town ever since the Chiefs drafted him. When weighed in the NFL combine, he measured 165 pounds. By the time the WR signed an NFL contract, he increased it to 169 pounds. He has often said that he wants to increase his weight to 170-175 pounds. However, that will take time.

Before his debut, Xavier Worthy was excited to play in the league. While the CB said that he would stop the receiver’s speed easily, it is easier said than done. The rookie was lightning fast for the Texas Longhorns. In 14 games in 2023, he made 75 receptions for 1,014 yards. Hence, it would be a test of the defensive hold (of the Bengals) and attacking prowess (of the Chiefs).

The rookie received praise from his quarterback before the week 2 showdown. Saying that the receiver performed well on his debut and can work on it, Patrick Mahomes mentioned, “It shows what he can do. Obviously, it showed his speed. It showed how he’s able to run routes and find open spaces. We want him to keep building.” After a 21-yard touchdown in the 1st quarter and a 35-yard touchdown in the 4th quarter, Xavier Worthy is on the 7th cloud.

Not only the players, Head Coach Andy Reid is also rejoicing. He has even warned the league from taking the rookie lightly. Talking about the receiver’s performance, the coach said, “He does have that speed and versatility going across the middle, he had a nice grab across the middle. Obviously, the teams we play will see that. They didn’t know it before, they know it now.” The WR knows that the competition will only increase.

In his rookie year itself, Xavier Worthy is making all the noise. The pressure on Chiefs is huge. A 3-peat! Will he help them write their name in NFL history books? Chiefdom is hoping he does.
