As the Kansas City Chiefs slowly make their way to the end of the 2023 season, they have received deeply saddening news. The 1984 Chiefs Hall of Famer and offensive line legend Ed Budde passed away at the age of 83. It was the former defensive end David Lindstrom who announced the passing of Ed Budde to the NFL world on X.

The Chiefs left guard stayed with the team for 14 years(1963-76) and earned the status of an All-Star, a Pro-Bowler, and a Super Bowl Champion. The football player had a special emotional connection with the Kansas City, as he continued to remain bonded as a part of the Kansas City Ambassadors even after his exit from the league. Remembering his worthy contributions to the sports world and admiring his notable legacy, the NFL fans poured in their heartfelt condolences to the family.

Chiefs grieve the loss of legend Ed Budde

The Kansas City Chiefs announced the passing away of Ed Budde through their official social media page, attaching a statement from their CEO. The offensive star died due to natural causes, per reports. The news received immediate attention from the NFL community, along with Chiefs’ CEO Clark Hunt, who grieved by commenting, My family and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Chiefs Hall of Famer Ed Budde.”

Addressing the contributions of the legend to KC, Hunt further added, “Ed spent his entire 14-year career with the Chiefs, and he was a cornerstone of those early Chiefs teams that brought pro football to Kansas City.” His words remain a testimony of the impact Ed Budde had on the Football world, drawing a recollection of all the efforts he invested in his more than a decade-long career.

Budde had been picked in the first round of the Chiefs’ first-ever draft. With his help, the Chiefs were able to clinch Super Bowl IV in the NFL-AFL era against the Minnesota Vikings. The legendary player was selected to play in the NFL-AFL Pro Bowl games seven times in his career with the Chiefs.  He played 177 games for the Chiefs and he and his son became the first in NFL history to be drafted in the first round to the same team for the same position.

In the later stage of his football journey, after he became a member of the Kansas City Ambassadors, Budde was known to be one of the most loved people in the Kansas City community. Apart from his professional career, Ed Budde will be remembered for the person he was and the role he played as a dad to his children. His daughter Tionne Ellegard remarked about the same, “Most people know my dad as a great football player, but he was a really great dad.”

Even CEO Hunt admired Budde for being an ardent family man, mentioning, “He was a great father to Brad, Tionne and John. My family and the entire Chiefs organization extend our sincere condolences to Carolyn and the Budde family.” Joining Hunt and the family of Ed Budde in mourning the loss, the NFL fans poured in their thoughts and prayers for the departed soul.
