Dallas Cowboys legend Larry Allen passed away on Monday at the age of 52. The Legend’s demise while away on vacation with family to Mexico, sent shockwaves throughout the world of the NFL after the announcement was made through social media. Fans, players, and teammates came together to grieve the loss of the former guard.

The Dallas Cowboys, home to Allen for twelve years, posted the announcement on X, “With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Cowboys Legend Larry Allen 💙”. Owner Jerry Jones also extended his condolences through the message by the franchise.

Former teammate Troy Aikman took to X to express his grief and talked about Allen’s on-field and off-field persona. Aikman wrote, “Just received the heartbreaking news of the passing of our beloved teammate Larry Allen. He was a HOF offensive lineman that dominated opponents regardless of the position played. Off the field, he was a gentle giant that loved his family. Rest in Peace LA💔🙏🏼”

Another heartbroken teammate was Emmitt Smith. The tragic news hit him hard, and the former running back struggled to hold back his tears. “I’m at a loss of words right now,” said Smith. “Such a good dude. Great player. Super person … It just breaks my heart. I know life is very fragile, and we’re only here for a moment. We need to make the best out of every moment and not take people for granted.

All greats leave behind a legacy. While Allen’s legacy is manifold, one of the most iconic ones is the chase-down tackle.

Though the late star was primarily a guard, Allen started at four different positions in the offense. He sometimes played as the tackle gave us one of the most memorable moments in the NFL. Back in 1994, it was his rookie year, and the world saw the first glimpse of the force named Larry Allen in a game against the New Orleans Saints.

After intercepting, the opposing quarterback, Darion Conner, was sprinting across the field when, out of nowhere, came in No. 73. Allen chased the QB down and tackled him from behind, cutting the run short, avoiding a touchdown and preventing a pick-six. The OL’s run was labeled by the analysts at the time as “one of the most impressive athletic feats I have ever seen.

NFL analyst Field Yates praised the late legend, calling him “one of the most incredible athletes,” and also shared a video of the icon’s chase-down tackle.

Allen is survived by his wife, Janelle, and three children, Jayla, Loriana, and Larry III. The legend, in his 14-year-long career, garnered several accolades under his belt, including six-time All-Pro, 11-time Pro Bowl, and a Super Bowl win. The offensive lineman was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Feb 2013.
