After a stunning debut season, and each season getting progressively better, Kansas City Chiefs fans were hoping that the 2023 season would also be a Patrick Mahomes show. But alas, that was not to be. The 2x Super Bowl MVP has been having some trouble bringing his A-game to the gridiron. And, as a result, the whole team’s performance is suffering.
So, what do the numbers say? How poorly is Mahomes performing this year? All said and done, his worst season is still better than the best season of some quarterbacks in the league right now. But for someone with ambitions of becoming the best quarterback in the history of the NFL, that might not cut it.
Numbers give Patrick Mahomes fans a reality check

According to the NFL’s website, Mahomes has just recorded his second-lowest number of touchdowns since he began as a starter with the Chiefs in 2018. Even though there is one more game left in the regular season, he will need to score 10 touchdowns more to match the record of his third-worst season in 2021. He is also yet to score a rushing touchdown, which has never happened before in 5 years. From 2018-2021 he averaged 2 rushing touchdowns per season. Last year, that number doubled to 4. That makes the drop to 0 even more baffling for Chiefs fans.
Despite falling off from his 41 touchdowns last season, Mahomes is averaging the highest touchdown percentage of his career. As for interceptions, he has already thrown more interceptions, at 14, this season than in any of his preceding years. At the same time, the number of sacks he has taken is the second-worst in his entire career at 27. His passer rating, however, is the worst it has ever been at 92.6. The same goes for Mahomes’ interception percentage which is at it’s lowest since 2018.
Of course, the real pressing concern is the former no. 10 overall pick’s impact on his team. How has all of this affected the Chiefs’ performance this season?
Chiefs are having their worst season under Mahomes

Mahomes and the Chiefs’ game plan have relied heavily on yards after the catch and underneath throws this season. The fact that Mahomes is not playing as surgically and that he is giving up turnovers almost more frequently than ever before are major factors in Kansas City’s recent offensive stagnation. With six season losses, this is the team’s worst showing under Patrick Mahomes’ direction. The Chiefs are also having a lot of difficulty winning consecutive games.
But not all the blame for the Chiefs’ woes can be laid on Mahomes alone. There could be several factors for the drop-off in offensive production for the Chiefs. One could be that with the defense being so good, the team is not put into shootout games where the offense has to carry the load.

Another could be the departure of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who was with the team in that position from 2018 to 2022. Although the Chiefs have made it to the playoffs, they need to rethink their strategy if they are to defend their Super Bowl title.
