Is the Ravens' 'brown shirt' tradition a more meaningful honor than the typical game ball?

Forget about the Detroit Lions because the Baltimore Ravens have their locker-room traditions after they win the game. Coach John Harbaugh doesn’t hand out game balls to guys who spearhead the game. Instead, he hands out a “brown shirt” to pay tribute to tough Navy SEALs.

Harbaugh took the podium after the presser and talked about a person on the Ravens staff, who has been a former Navy SEAL. The person who goes by the name Steve has enlightened Harbaugh about long long-standing tradition of Navy SEAL training and how the people who complete the tumultuous training are bestowed with a “brown shirt.”

“He told me that, he told me, and I probably, you know, we do something called the brown shirt, right? And the Brown Shirt, we say every time we give it out, after a win, it’s (our most prestigious award. And the Brown Shirt award is a nod to the Navy SEALs, because when you get through BUDS training and you become a SEAL, you get a brown shirt, that’s my understanding. Steve Claggett is a former Navy SEAL, he’s on our staff, and he took me through the history of that just a little bit,” the Ravens HC said.

Apparently, the Ravens have been keeping this tradition up for the last 12-14 years and it goes to the guy who “does the dirty work” which in this case, was Lamar Jackson. The reason why the 2x MVP got the “brown shirt” wasn’t because he threw 5 touchdowns and passed for 281 yards. It’s because of something else entirely.

Lamar Jackson did more than just be a quarterback tonight. With 10:38 remaining in the last quarter, Jackson tossed a pass to Derrick Henry who tried running for the endzone. Knowing how hard it is to cover Derrick Henry, a couple of defenders ran after him. And Jackson understood he had his work cut out for him.

Have an interesting take?

Jackson blocked Antoine Winfield Jr. to make way for the running back. But he had already stepped on the sideline by that time. But that’s beside the point. What matters is Lamar Jackson went out of his way to make room for Derrick Henry. Perhaps that’s why he thinks so highly of LJ8.

He said something after the presser that many might find a bit far-fetched. Or it may just be right considering how Jackson performed tonight.

John Harbaugh cannot stop praising Lamar Jackson

A couple of months ago, Harbaugh said that Jackson will be recognized as the best quarterback to play in the NFL. He doubled down on the narrative when he said that the Ravens QB will go down in the history of the MNF. Is he exaggerating? Maybe not. But check out what he said after the 41-31 win against the Buccaneers.

“Yeah, it’s incredible and he’ll go down in the history of Monday Night Football for sure. He’s got a lot more to go. He’s going to be thinking about the next one. Well, we have one coming up here in a couple of weeks. Another one on the road. Against a pretty good coach. But that’s later,” the Ravens coach said after the game.

Now, the Ravens are 5-2 and will be preparing to head down to Cleveland. It should be an easy win for the Baltimore team. However, they will face Sean Payton and his Broncos after the Browns game. At this point, the Baltimore Ravens look unstoppable.
