Mark Andrews is believed to be the only player in the league battling Type 1 diabetes–something he’s managed since he was just 9. He pricks his finger nearly 30 times a game. Still, the disease hasn’t held him back one bit. At 29, he’s the all-time touchdown leader for the Baltimore Ravens with 51 scores. That alone tells you how much Lamar Jackson and John Harbaugh trust him. But here’s the twist—what if their favorite target doesn’t stay with them much longer?
Mark Andrews is heading into the final year of his four-year, $56 million extension. He’s set to earn $7 million in base salary, with a $16.9 million cap hit. But remember what Ravens GM Eric DeCosta said not too long ago: “A year from now we’ll have some tough choices and decisions to make regarding players (Andrews, Isaiah Likely, and Charlie Kolar).” Maybe that time is now.
According to NFL insider Dov Kleiman on X, “Ravens GM Eric DeCosta is non-committal about TE Mark Andrews remaining on the team ahead of the upcoming NFL Draft: He’s a great player, and we’re in the business of keeping as many great players as we can, so there’s always a lot of unpredictability with the draft. You just never know.”

Back in January, coach John Harbaugh said, “Mark is a huge part of our future.” But now? That huge part might be heading into his final days with the franchise. So, what happens if the Ravens trade their star tight end? According to Kleiman, “The Ravens would save $7M in cap room by trading Andrews while taking on $9.9M in dead money.” That’s not just a numbers game, though. Losing Andrews would hit hard in the locker room, especially to QB Lamar Jackson.
This is evident in what Harbaugh said earlier, “Mark Andrews is a great football player and he’s also a very tough-minded individual…All of our players love Mark.” And just a few weeks ago, when asked about Mark’s future with the team, the 62-year-old coach didn’t hesitate – “I do fully expect him to be playing for us next year. He’s just too good a player. Mark would be one of the few guys I would expect to be here, so we’ll see what happens. My plans are that we’ve got Mark, we’ve got Isaiah, we’ve got Charlie [Kolar, and] we’ve got Pat Ricard all in place doing all those jobs.”
But football’s full of surprises. Even GM Eric DeCosta couldn’t offer certainty. “I never know what’s going to happen. And I would never want to say this or that. But I can tell you this: Mark Andrews is a warrior. He’s played his butt off for us….He’s a great player. And I think we’re in the business of keeping as many great players as we can. So, there’s always a lot of unpredictability with the draft. You just never know.”
Still, being great doesn’t always guarantee security. That missed game-tying pass by Andrews in the 2024 divisional round? It might be weighing on the decision. And now? The word is, that three teams have been showing interest in the TE.
What’s your perspective on:
Is trading Mark Andrews a smart move, or a huge mistake for the Ravens' future?
Have an interesting take?
Which team could be the second home for Mark Andrews?
Mark Andrews has been all heart for the Ravens since 2018. Drafted in the third round, and now, he’s the franchise leader in touchdown catches. In addition, he has been elected as a Pro Bowler three times. So, the man is been nothing short of a force. But change might be coming this offseason. If the Ravens part ways, some teams would grab him quickly.
For instance, take the Colts. They were awful at tight end last season. With just 467 yards total from that group, they need a reliable vet. Whether it’s Daniel Jones or Anthony Richardson throwing the football, Andrews could step in and lead right away. Their top tight end last year had just 14 catches. So, obviously, Andrews could be a great addition to this franchise.

If not the Colts, how about the Bears? They expected more from Caleb Williams, but the season went south. They even fired their coach, and now they’ve got Ben Johnson – the same guy who helped Sam LaPorta shine in Detroit. With Cole Kmet as their current TE1, Andrews could easily bring more fire to that offense.
Last but not least, there’s the Jets. Another tight-end group that just didn’t show up. They finished 26th in the league in tight-end production. So, now, as per their current status, Aaron Rodgers is out, and Justin Fields is in. New coach, a fresh start, and a real need for someone like Andrews. It’s also because Tyler Conklin led with 449 yards, and it wasn’t enough.

Back in Baltimore, Isaiah Likely is ready. He showed promise last year, with career highs across the board – in receptions (42), receiving yards (477), and touchdown catches (six) last season. But he’s entering the final year of his deal too. So even that feels shaky. And Andrews’ future is still hanging on a thin thread, after 673 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. But as we said above, most people only remember one thing – that dropped two-point conversion against the Bills, for which he also received death threats.
