Is Nick Saban the GOAT of college football, or is his legacy still up for debate?

Nick Saban is earning rave reviews for his new avatar as a sportscaster. Fans like him in the ESPN’s College GameDay show. And boy, he has stories to tell. After coaching college teams for more than 4 decades  (27 years as head coach), he has plenty of insider info for the viewers. He shares many moments from those years on the show. One of his most famous proteges, Derrick Henry, confirmed something about the legendary coach.

The running back recently appeared on the Dan Patrick Show, where he was asked about a joke made by Nick Saban. Patrick asked him about the Deez N— joke and his new role as a sportscaster. Henry first acknowledged that the former coach always had fun with the players during the practice sessions.

The running back also admitted to hearing that Deez N— joke often and said, “He used to say that like if we were practicing, he would just joke. He would get somebody like every time, he definitely joked about that. I remember those days.” That’s hilarious. Though Nick Saban was often strict with the players for the results, he often had a light moment in the locker room.

Derrick Henry excelled under his guidance. While he was a good player when he arrived at Alabama in 2013, the coach turned him into a great one by the end of his college career. In 2015, his last NCAA season, the running back topped in points scored, rushing attempts, rushing yards, and rushing touchdowns. Henry also won the Heisman Trophy, the Doak Walker Award, and many more awards.

In 17 seasons with Alabama, the coach had a 201-29 win-loss record. The team won 6 national championships and had 4 Heisman Trophy winners (2 RBs Mark Ingram and Derrick Henry, WR DeVonta Smith, and QB Bryce Young). While they had already inducted him into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2013, they went one step ahead to honor him by renaming Bryant-Denny Stadium field as Saban Field.

Players who played under him sent in congratulatory messages, which included Ravens RB Henry as well. The running back praised the coach and said, “You’re the goat. … Not only did you make me a better player, you made me a better person as well.” Truly an acknowledgment of his greatness.

NFL has more than 61 Alabama players with contracts for $1.1 billion. College football lovers will definitely miss him and his antics on the field.
