To all those card collectors out there, we have some urgent news for you that you can’t ignore. Anyone who is synonymous with how rare Patrick Mahomes’ rookie edition trading cards are would know how big of a deal it is. Yes, Mahomes isn’t just a household name on the gridiron. The Chiefs QB also has a massive presence among those who like to collect sports memorabilia. And someone on eBay has just the right opportunity for you crazy card collectors.

2017 Panini Prizm Patrick Mahomes Black Finite Rookie Auto RC 1/1 is up for sale with a whopping 9.5 grade. But to own that piece of trading card, you will have to dish out more than $2.5M. Yes, that’s right. It doesn’t come in cheap value. If you want it, then you will have to probably outbid others. Now, despite such a huge value. This card will probably fail to beat Mahomes’ own record, which he still holds to date.

Going back to 2021, Mahomes’ 2017 Panini National Treasures 1-0f-1, NFL shield autographed card was sold for a sum of $4.3M. At that time, it was the most ever cash paid to own a football trading card. And you know what’s crazier? It still is and ranks 7th in the all-time list of sports memorabilia trading cards. That eye-watering sum of $4.3M also left behind the GOAT himself, Tom Brady.

Before Mahomes rookie edition trading card captured the No.1 spot. It was Brady’s 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Rookie Ticket Autograph card that sold for $3.1M. As PWCC director of business development Jesse Craig said at that time, “There weren’t 1-of-1s when Brady was a rookie in 2000. And, look, there’s inherently more risk whenever you invest into a player who is still active and young. Mahomes could get injured tomorrow. He could also win another MVP and Super Bowl.”

And guess what? Mahomes never really misses a game through injury. Now, coming into his MVP and Super Bowls, the Chiefs QB has already won two Super Bowl MVPs and three Lombardi. So we can probably guess the value of that card is much higher than it was 4 years back. However, whatever that estimated value could be. It would still fall short of the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle trading card edition.

Baseball legend Mickey Mantle still reigns supreme over Patrick Mahomes and others

You would probably have to do a lot more than just win MVPs and Super Bowls to even think about breaking Mickey Mantle’s record. Going back to 2022, the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle trading card that carried a 9.5 grade broke all sorts of records. Heritage Auctions claimed it for a jaw-dropping price of $12.6M. It still remains the most ever paid-for sports memorabilia, card, item, or anything else.

After winning Mickey Mantle’s 72-year-old card, Heritage’s director of sports auctions, Chris Ivy, said, “This card is arguably the finest-condition example of the most iconic post-war card in the world. That grade, plus the fact it has documented provenance from the most storied find in hobby history, puts this card in a category of its own.” Now, what makes Mickey Mantle’s cards more impressive? Three of them still occupy the top 10 spots on the most valuable trading cards ever.

Have an interesting take?

1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 was sold for over $4M. And remains 8th on the all-time list. Another version of his card, graded 9 by PSA, was purchased for $5.2M in 2021. Rob Gough, an entrepreneur, and an actor, made it the most expensive baseball trading card ever at that time. Looking at Mantle’s record, will Patrick Mahomes ever reach those heights in sports memorabilia? Well, we can’t say for sure, as Mahomes still remains active and has a lot ahead of him to achieve in the coming years.
