Patrick Mahomes is one of the best NFL quarterbacks of all time if not the best. However, that was not always the case. Back when the athlete was just starting and making his way to college, it was a stressful time for Randi Mahomes and her son. Eventually, he went to Texas Tech, but his mother once revealed that the football star could have pursued a career with the Texas Longhorns at the University of Texas, Austin.

In a 2021 interview with Kent Hance, the momma bear discussed the college offers Mahomes had got before choosing Texas Tech. While Randi claimed the tabloids stated otherwise, she admitted, “He didn’t really receive a whole lot of offers.” The athlete received letters from “Rice and Harvard.” However, with the father of two wanting to play either baseball, basketball, or football while he studied, they wound up slipping through the cracks.

With few offers coming in, Mahomes took things into his own hands and visited the University of Texas. Randi stated Patrick had met with the Texas Longhorns. However, he wasn’t happy with the offer. The mom of three stated, “They wanted him as safety and he knew that was not it. Like that was the reason he almost quit playing football because he didn’t want to play on defense.”

Mahomes continued to get mainly baseball and basketball offers, which did not strike his fancy. Everything changed when he got an offer from Texas Tech. His mother, Randi, confided “Tech was like his place.” After all, they recently honored the star QB of  the Kansas City Chiefs.

In fact, the 28-year-old was only the eighth to receive such an honor from the esteemed university.

Mahomes’ former head coach Kliff Kingsbury and his family informed him about his Hall of Fame induction through a video. After all that he has achieved , its intriguing to think what could have happened if he had gone with the Texas Longhorns. Guess we will never know.
