As the night ended, Patrick Mahomes exited the gridiron with tears in his eyes. A dream had shattered, and somewhere, the heart was shattering, too. A three-peat celebration was what the Kansas City Chiefs had envisioned as they entered the Caesars Superdome on February 9. What they instead got? A meticulous dismantling of their defenses by the Philadelphia Eagles—a 40-22 nightmare. Even Randi Mahomes’ battle cries slowly drowned out amid the “Fly, Eagles Fly” chants…

It was especially not a good day for the quarterback. Being sacked a career-high six times and intercepted twice, including a pick-six, Mahomes’ momentous run all season reached a screeching halt as the Eagles reached a staggering 34-0 lead with less than three minutes remaining in the third quarter. By midway through the fourth quarter, that impending heartbreak had taken the shape of a 40-6—after a Mahomes strip sack, and a field goal.

Eagles’ star QB, Jalen Hurts, on the other hand, concluded the night with a revenge plot executed right, a Super Bowl MVP title to his name, and 17-of-22 for 221 yards through the air and two passing touchdowns. He also rushed for 72 yards (a new Super Bowl record for a QB). As for Saquon Barkley? His personal sacrifice fell worth it.

The 28-year-old might not have broken the 40-year-old standing single-season rushing record (minus the postseason), but an equal or even better picture presented itself. On one hand, he stood atop the stadium with his young daughter in his arms as confetti poured in. On the other hand, Barkley will now be known as that elite running back who broke NFL’s single-season rushing record (postseason included), topping the mark of 2,476 yards set by Terrell Davis.

Yet, Mahomes’ mother was holding out hope like any mother would…

Right after Kendrick Lamar’s performance at halftime, as the Chiefs took the field, Randi was doing what she does best—being her son’s No. 1 cheerleader despite visible adversities. In the third quarter, she took to X to fire up the team, posting, “Let’s go!!!” as the Chiefs struggled to keep up with Philly. But guess it was too late for that. Jalen Hurts and the Eagles’ O-line didn’t even give the Chiefs’ defense a chance to fight back. From the moment they found the end zone, they made sure to hold onto that lead until the final whistle. KC stood there, helpless, watching all the glory that could have been theirs slip away.

It all started with Jalen Hurts finding the end zone in the first quarter. After that, Philly’s placekicker, Jake ‘The Make,’ worked his magic, adding three more points with a field goal. From there, there was no turning back. The Eagles had their sights locked on one thing. The Lombardi. And KC was just left chasing shadows. Well, there goes that dream.

Randi’s cheering, a million prayers, ‘Tayvodooo‘—none of it worked at the Caesars Superdome. Just felt like the stars were aligned for the Eagles, huh? And for all the non-Chiefs fans?

What’s your perspective on:

Are the Chiefs losing their magic, or is this just a temporary setback for Mahomes and crew?

Have an interesting take?

Bet they’re on cloud nine right now, raising a toast to Philly for getting revenge on their behalf.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs fail

The entire 2024 season was all about whether Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs could write a new chapter in history. And now, we have the answer. All that long wait, all that enthusiasm—just crushed like that in a few hours. It must feel like a nightmare for Chiefs Kingdom. Three straight AFC Championships, but not three straight Lombardi trophies.

Honestly, the Eagles were such beasts that Patrick Mahomes couldn’t be his usual self on the gridiron today. Not even a bit. The Chiefs’ QB racked up 257 yards but was intercepted twice. Mahomes managed to score three TDs somehow, but all three went in vain. In the late fourth quarter of the game, as the clock was winding down in the Eagles’ favor, the Chiefs stood there, watching a living nightmare unfold. Mahomes ultimately finished the game after completing 21 of 32 passes for 257 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions while adding 25 yards on four carries with a fumble.

But Mahomes wasn’t going to brush the loss under the rug. Barely an hour after the final whistle, the 29-year-old took to X, and wrote a heartfelt message. “Appreciate all the love and support from #ChiefsKingdom I let y’all down today. I’ll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it. Want to give thanks to God for every opportunity he has given me. We will be back,” he wrote.

The Eagles took their long-awaited revenge for their Super Bowl LVII loss. Jalen Hurts finally got his hands on his first-ever Lombardi Trophy. And guess what? It’s time for Saquon Barkley to pop that champagne bottle, celebrating both his win and his birthday.
