Just four years from delivering a Super Bowl to the Rams, it seems Matthew Stafford’s chapter in LA could soon come to an end. Looks like leading the Rams to an unlikely Divisional round berth this season and a contract restructuring last season isn’t enough to keep Stafford playing in Southern California. But the thing that can actually catch everyone’s attention is not related to Stafford leaving the Rams. It’s what Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd had to say about Stafford’s next destination in the NFL. Let’s just say he had a wild inside scoop for us on what could happen with Stafford in the upcoming weeks.
First things first, Cowherd said, “I am going to propose something. I’m just proposing it, but I made a couple of calls yesterday. A couple of texts this morning. I’m gonna propose something.” Well, buckle up because Cowherd’s proposal isn’t something that you might have predicted in your wildest dreams. But before getting that, Cowherd said, “The Rams like Matthew Stafford, but they’re tiring of the constant quarterback talk, his wife saying things publicly.” See, Kelly has been quite open about her husband’s future in LA. On her podcast, The Morning After, Kelly spoke candidly about how she would deal with Stafford’s exit from the Rams.
“Right now, if the Rams decided that they wanted to trade him, or Matthew decided he didn’t want to play for the Rams. I’m good. I would move my family. Yeah, that might be tough. First month, hard. After that, turns out. I like my kids to learn how to be resilient.” Maybe Kelly’s statement didn’t go down well among the Rams’ front office. But the publicity surrounding Stafford’s future isn’t the only thing that could propel the Rams to trade Stafford. Cowherd believes it’s that smell of the third overall pick from New York that can prove to be the ultimate deal-breaker. “I’m told. They want the Giants first-round pick at number three. So they probably want a first, a second, a first, a third, but you gotta pay Stafford if you’re the Giants, you have to give them a new deal.”

Here’s the thing: The Giants giving up their No.3 overall pick for Stafford would be crazy, to say the least. See, there’s no doubt Stafford is good, even in his twilight. He is just coming off another productive season, completing 65.8% of his passes, throwing for 3,762 yards and 20 TDs. He was also a few plays away from pushing the Rams into the NFC Championship, losing to the eventual winners, the Eagles 28-22. But it’s a 3rd overall pick we are talking about here. Are those numbers really deserving of a pick that high? Absolutely not. The Giants could easily select either Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders to solve their QB woes.
However, the Titans and Browns, who hold No.1 and No.2 picks, could also snatch them away before the Giants get their hands on them. Even if they do, the Giants would still have the option to draft Travis Hunter. So, not everything is doom and gloom for them. But there’s actually more to the story of Stafford joining the Big Blues. Malik Nabers and his brother-in-law could also push for Stafford’s deal in 2025.
Giants lead the line to land Matthew Stafford next season
In the last few days, a lot has happened surrounding Stafford’s move to the Giants. On February 10th, ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter reported, “The Giants are hiring former Jaguars and Bills WR coach Chad Hall as their assistant quarterbacks coach.” Well, this news could create some buzz surrounding the Giants trying to address their QB room. However, there was this additional note that actually caught everyone’s attention and further fueled Stafford’s move to New York, “Hall also is the brother-in-law of current Rams QB Matthew Stafford.”

So, maybe Hall could serve as a factor in luring Stafford out of LA. But he might not be the only reason that could entice Stafford at the possibility of playing on the East Coast. Giants star receiver Malik Nabers’ praise of Stafford can pull the veteran signal-caller to East Rutherford, “His arm talent is crazy. His side arm is crazy. The way he throws the ball, his angles. He knows the defense. I mean he is a veteran QB…I like the way he throws the football.”
With Nabers, there’s another bright spot for Stafford to engineer a move to New York. But the real question is how much the Giants are willing to give up for Stafford. He will not be a long-term solution, considering his age. Neither is there any guarantee he will be a hit.
However, the Giants could gamble with tapping Stafford. Who knows, maybe he might turn out to be a huge hit. Because the last time a franchise traded Stafford, he ended up leading them to a Super Bowl.
