Things are moving fast in Southern California. Weeks after the Cooper Kupp trade came to light, the Rams are making more changes on the offensive side of things. This time, it’s the turn of their veteran QB Matthew Stafford, who came back from an injury-plagued season to lead the Rams into a surprising NFC Divisional Round game. Although they lost, Stafford at 37 didn’t look like a QB who didn’t have plays left at the highest level. However, the Rams are yet again on Stafford’s tail to restructure his contract for the second time in the space of a year.

Stafford is still on a four-year, $160M extension he signed back in 2022. But last year, he had just restructured his gargantuan contract, making him $36M in guarantees this season. Then, he also had a $4M roster bonus that carried into 2025. However, reports started to emerge that the Rams saw Stafford only as a year-to-year proposition at best. So, maybe that’s why they are yet again trying to restructure his contract, as per ESPN reporter Jordan Raanan.

But that’s not the only reason why the Rams are calling Stafford to their front office yet again. ESPN’s Dan Graziano gave a more detailed outlook of the things for which the Rams have to sit down with Stafford’s contract before next season. “The rest of his 2025 compensation is a non-guaranteed $23M. His current cap hit for 2025 is roughly $50M, so look for the team to convert salary into bonuses again to lower the hit and move Stafford’s 2025 compensation into a range more befitting of a good starting NFL quarterback.” All right, considering the Rams are trying to lower their cap hit using Stafford’s contract. Is it really justifiable if you look at his numbers this season?

At 37, with constant questions of retirement looming over his head. Stafford clocked in a season passing for 3,762 yards, 20 TDs, and only eight INTs. He had a passer rating of 93.7 while completing 65.8% of his passes. Well, the numbers aren’t great, but they aren’t bad either. And like ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler pointed out this year, it could be “even more difficult” to restructure Stafford’s contract. Like his wife, Kelly has also painted a bleak picture of Stafford’s future in LA with her latest thoughts.

Matthew Stafford’s wife paints a grim picture about her husband’s future in LA

With everything that’s going on regarding Stafford’s contract and lack of appreciation behind the scenes. Kelly is clearly a bit upset with the treatment her husband has been getting in LA for a while now. On her latest episode of The Morning After podcast, Kelly clearly stated her thoughts about Stafford’s future with the Rams, “I love the life that we have built here. With that being said, I love an adventure. I am all for it. Right now, if the Rams decided that they wanted to trade Stafford, or Matthew decided he didn’t want to play for the Rams, I’m good.” See, neither of those things have really happened. The only constant thing is Stafford’s restructuring of his contract. There are no possible trade talks and neither has Stafford expressed his desire to move on.

Moving on—after expressing her true feelings about everything that’s going on with Stafford in LA. Kelly also poured more fuel over Stafford’s likely exit before next season. On Monday, Kelly posted a playful picture with Stafford at a dimly lit restaurant with the caption, “Future might be blurry but the present is always clear with you🤪.” Like it’s a clear indication of what’s happening around Stafford’s future with blue and gold.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Matthew Stafford being undervalued by the Rams despite his Super Bowl win and solid performance?

Have an interesting take?

There’s also the respect that Kelly feels has somewhat evaporated in recent times, “My husband wants to win. He’s not trying to put a team in a bad situation…But there has to be a light feeling of being valued and respected.” I guess, all things considered, the Staffords are just looking for a pat on the back of someone who led them to a Super Bowl victory a few years back. Is it just too much for them to ask for some love in return for the things Stafford has given LA? We shall find out sooner rather than later, considering how things are moving in Southern California.
