Ever since Pete Carroll has taken the Las Vegas Raiders’ head coach job, there haven been rumors that he might target Russell Wilson as the team’s quarterback. And why not? The two have spent ten years together in the Seattle Seahawks and even won a Super Bowl. Adding more to it, Wilson’s career has gone downhill since he left Carroll. He had a miserable stint with the Denver Broncos that spanned only for two seasons and it looks likely that the Pittsburgh Steelers will move on after the 10-time Pro Bowler saw a significant drop in performance over the final five games that led to the Steelers being eliminated in the playoffs. Moreover, Russell reportedly wanted to play for the Raiders before he ultimately signed with the steelers. Understandably, the rumor mill is spinning with several opinions pouring in.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport sees it as a possibility. “The Raiders still need (a quarterback). Keep an eye on this: one of (Pete Carroll’s) good friends is still Russell Wilson, the Steelers quarterback. My understanding is Russell Wilson wanted to play for the Raiders last year, did not happen. Look for that union, potentially, to be discussed,” Rapoport said. However, FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer differs. “That ain’t going to happen,” is his take in the matter. What Wilson himself has to say in this?
Wilson kind of side-stepped it only saying, “Pete’s going to be a great coach, obviously. He’s great at what he does. But I’m focused on the Steelers.” Meanwhile, Raiders tight end Brock Bowers smiled when asked about the notion of playing with Wilson but stopped short of stumping for an upgrade over Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew. “He said he’s great, he’s awesome and he brings a lot of energy to practices,” Bowers said. “Coach Carroll has won a lot and has a lot of football knowledge, so I’m excited to see what happens.” Amid this entire saga of uncertainty and speculation, Coach Carroll’s keeping his options wide open to revamp that Raiders offense.

From the looks of it, the team’s already made an interesting addition! Word on the street (or rather X), according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, is that Chris Beatty is the new wide receivers coach for the Raiders. This isn’t just any hire; Fowler reported on Feb 6, 2025, “Veteran coach Chris Beatty is joining the #Raiders staff as wide receivers coach, per source.” Beatty bringing some serious experience to the desert.
Beatty spent the last year as the Chicago Bears wide receivers coach, also serving as the interim offensive coordinator in the latter half of the season. He served three seasons as the Los Angeles Chargers wide receivers coach before that. Beatty left the Pittsburgh Panthers after two seasons as the wide receivers coach, taking the job with the Chargers to embark on his NFL journey.
“This definitely was bittersweet because, trust me, I love everyone [at Pitt],” Beatty told Pittsburgh Sports Now after he accepted the Chargers job. “I appreciate coach Narduzzi for giving me the opportunity at Pitt. They really have a great coaching staff, along with great people, in every respect. Then obviously the players, I love those guys, they’re my guys. This definitely was not easy. Believe me, there are very few jobs that I would’ve left these guys to go to because I felt like I had a great gig and situation here. I was not looking for a change.” And get this: Beatty’s got a knack for turning college talent into NFL stars.

Just ask Maurice Ffrench, who was catching everything thrown his way back when Beatty was coaching at Pitt. French had a standout career at Pitt, finishing with 156 catches, ranking eighth all-time for the program. In his senior season, Ffrench set a Pitt record with 96 receptions, racking up 850 yards and four touchdowns.
Beatty joined the Pitt staff before the 2019 season and immediately emerged as a high-profile recruiter and developer. His major win during his time at Pitt came in Maryland, securing eventual Biletnikoff-winner and first round draft pick Jordan Addison. He also landed commitments from then-four-star Naquan Brown, Rodney Hammond Jr., Myles Alston and Malik Newton.
On the other hand, Chip Kelly, the Las Vegas Raiders‘ new offensive coach, who is coming back to the NFL after an eight-year hiatus, is stoked to be working with Carroll. As The Athletic’s Tashan Reed and Vic Tafur, said, “I think everybody in the coaching profession, if you get a chance to work with Pete Carroll, you’re pretty excited about it!” The two have a bit of history, battling it out back in the day when Kelly was at Oregon and Carroll was running things at USC, and now, Kelly’s stoked to be on the same team.

However, their QB situation is a huge question mark heading into 2025. But Kelly seems to have a plan! He says he’s not looking for some lab-grown, perfect QB, but rather someone whose strengths they can build the whole offense around. It’s all about fitting the guy into the system, not the other way around. Now there’s a new name being thrown into the mix as a potential wildcard for the Raiders!
A wildcard QB recommendation comes to Pete Carroll amidst Wilson drama!
Things are officially getting interesting in the quarterback saga! First off, Mark Sanchez was on ‘The Herd with Colin Cowherd’ on January 3, and he tossed out this wild idea of Pete Carroll teaming up with Daniel Jones. Although Jones has had a rough go of it lately, Sanchez believes Carroll could be the guy to unlock his potential, saying: “Do not sleep on Daniel Jones. Wherever that guy goes, if he lands in the right spot that would be one of the best places for him with that head coach (Carroll). He has all the ability in the world. That kid would be dialed there, I love, I love that possibility.” Can you imagine? A reclamation project QB in the Silver and Black?

Now, Jones hasn’t exactly been lighting up the league. He was signed to the Vikings in November 2024 and has had a rocky run with the New York Giants. He’s got the arm, sure, but the injuries and sacks have been piling up. Still, a fresh start with a coach like Carroll could be just what he needs or so Sanchez thinks. However, Vikings insider Darren Wolfson has stirred the pot claiming that Minnesota wants Jones to be back for the next season.
But wait, there’s more! What about Russell Wilson? He himself is saying he wants to stay in Pittsburgh Steelers, saying, “I’m looking forward to hopefully going back to the Steelers and we’ll see what happens with the rest.” Of course, that’s just Russ talking, and he signed with the Steelers for a year. With his current contract up, who knows what’ll happen next? What’s your take on this? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!
