Is Dak Prescott the only thing keeping the Cowboys from being just another average NFL team?

Last season, when the Cowboys exited from playoff contention after their 48-32 wild card game loss against the Packers. One Cowboys player’s mom decided to throw jibes against QB Dak Prescott’s performances on the night. CeeDee Lamb’s mother, Leta Ramirez, whose unwavering support for her son’s footballing career came out a bit wrong.

Taking to her Facebook after the loss Leta wrote in a post, “DAK ISN’T IT!!!” However, she didn’t stop there, while continuing on the comment section, Lamb’s mom added, “They need to get rid of his a–!! It’s guys on that team that want a RING! They work hard.” Although she could be referring to his son at that time, Prescott is the one turning heads now.

Fast forward to the present day, her son’s contractual holdout turned into a $136 Million 4-year contract. At the same time, Dak Prescott is receiving praise from multiple NFL analysts and coordinators. “Without him, they would be a very average or marginal team,” an executive said. Well, average might be the right word, considering the performances Prescott continues to offer the Cowboys. This marks the fifth consecutive year Prescott is ranked between ninth and 12th among the QBs in the league.

Elsewhere, Prescott’s dominant displays last season allowed him to create a bit of history for himself. In the three-time Pro Bowler’s five career games last season, he went on to record more than 450 yards, which tied him with Drew Brees. Therefore, etching his name in the NFL record books for being the second-most player to do so after Ben Roethlisberger’s sensational eighth.

Appreciating his performances for Dallas, an offensive play caller stated, “Dak can roll out of bed and throw for 450. It’s unbelievable. It’s just those moments in the playoffs against the Niners or Packers where, if you want to be Tier 1. One of these times, you’re going to have to put that team on your back and will your team to a win.” But Prescott remains the only player out of Dan Marino, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning on the list, where he cemented his second position to not play in a conference championship game yet.

Citing his showing in the postseason, a defensive coordinator expressed, “I have always given Dak a 2. When I did it last year, I gave him a 3. He proves year in and year out that he cannot get it done in the postseason.” Even a few others talked about the shortcomings that the All-Pro could be facing when it comes to delivering in knock-out matches.

“Dak is probably the definition of a 2. There are some holes; he’s not perfect, but he’s about as steady of a 2 as you can be,” yet another DC added. Well, Prescott still has some ground to cover compared to other QBs in the league who fall within Tier 1, like Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen, who have retained their spots this season.

Although the three-time Pro Bowler is garnering attention from experts around the league, his contract situation with the Cowboys remains a big mystery. With him hitting unrestricted free agency next season, Prescott holds all the leverage as the Cowboys look for a solution.

Last season’s runner-up to NFL MVP remains at a crossroads with the Cowboys regarding his possible contract extension. Having signed his four-year deal worth $160 million back in 2021. Dak’s release from the Cowboys’ roster could see them save up to $60 million annually. Providing elaborations on the same, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN stated, “He’s well aware of how well he can do in free agency if he were to just let this ride out, play well again and put up a huge QBR and then be there in March for $60 million a year, whatever it’s going to cost.”

Him hitting the free agency and causing a trade war in the offseason could put Falcons QB Kirk Cousins’ deal to shame. Last season, the 36-year-old was in a similar position that led to him signing a four-year deal worth $180 million. Moreover, Prescott’s numbers last year also offer a strong case for him, where he racked up 4,516 yards and 36 TDs while maintaining a 12-5 record. With age on his side, the QB is well aware of the situation he is in.

Speaking about his Cowboys tenure, the Pro-Bowler stated, “I enjoy being a Cowboy 1,000 percent, enjoy living in Dallas, enjoy everything about it. But this is a business. Conversations are going well, but I’m thankful to be where I am right now, and that’s here.” Although the 31-year-old remains hopeful regarding his long-term future at AT&T Stadium.
