It’s that time of year when rumors start flowing around on who is picking whom. Yeah, maybe the postseason is still going on. But for the Steelers, their season has already ended with another one-and-done playoff exit. So, for the ninth straight season, the Steelers have found themselves planning for next season a bit earlier than others. And watching their lack of success, Colin Cowherd has a wild suggestion for them, which could probably pull them out of the rug they are currently in.

Speaking of wild, what Cowherd has suggested in his Thursday episode on The Herd can take anyone by surprise. He wants the Steelers to all in and bring a potential franchise QB in Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. But it wouldn’t be easy, as Cowherd suggested, “I would trade T.J. Watt, George Pickens, two first-rounders and go get Shedeur Sanders if you think he’s a starting QB.” Like that’s a truly astonishing suggestion. Watt, who is a reigning Defensive Player of the Year and Pickens, who remains the only reliable wide receiver for the Steelers. And trading them away would require some guts for sure.

But this isn’t the first time—Cowherd has made such outrageous trade suggestions. Last year, when USC QB Caleb Williams was touted as the best QB in the 2024 draft clash. Cowherd suggested the Steelers to trade Watt, Pickens, and three first-round picks to draft Williams. Well, it didn’t happen, and Williams instead went to the Bears. And we all know how that turned out. As Chicago only managed to win 5 of their 17 games, with Williams starting all of them.

However, drafting Sanders won’t be easy, as he will probably remain a top 5 pick, as Cowherd predicted. So, to have any chance of bringing Sanders to Pittsburgh. The Steelers have to deal with the likes of the Titans, Browns and the Giants. And let’s just say—it won’t be easy to convince them to move down. Each of those franchises is looking for a QB themselves. This means that giving away their spot to draft a franchise signal-caller won’t make any sense.

Like for now, this really seems like a far-fetched idea. But whatever happens, Russell Wilson’s future looks pretty bleak. Even though he has expressed his desire to wear black and gold next season, the Steelers have a decision to make.

Russell Wilson’s Pittsburgh dream may not come true

What’s your perspective on:

Is Colin Cowherd's trade idea a stroke of genius or just plain madness for the Steelers?

Have an interesting take?

After Wilson’s Broncos tenure, it looked like Russ didn’t have any fuel left in his tank to continue in the NFL. However, when the Steelers took a chance on him and also rewarded him with a starting position, it looked like the nine-time Pro Bowler was slowly finding his feet again. And it was true up until Wilson’s first seven starts in Pittsburgh. With Russ in the middle, the Steelers won six while putting up 28 points on average. But for some reason, it all came crashing down thereafter.

The Steelers lost their final five games, ending what could have been a memorable season for Russ. In that final skid, Wilson’s offense only averaged 14 points and 263 total yards. As for the veteran QB, he finished his first season in black and gold, racking up 2,482 yards and 16 TDs. And let’s not forget. The 36-year-old also took 33 sacks while throwing 5 interceptions in just 11 games.

So, despite everything, highs and lows, Wilson made his feelings clear about his probable future in Pittsburgh, “I love it here and everything else, and I think we have a great football team. Obviously, it didn’t end the way we wanted it to. And I think there’s a lot more to do.” But as time progresses, Wilson may not return next season. Considering the Steelers do bring back all three of their QBs, Russell Wilson may find it hard to start in 2025.
