History-chasing games call for history-making moments. And Super Bowl LIX? It might just deliver one before kickoff. No sitting U.S. president has ever attended a Super Bowl. Ever. But this year? Donald Trump says he’ll be there—front and center—to watch Patrick Mahomes chase a 3-peat.

Let’s rewind to February 2020—Super Bowl LIV. Chiefs vs. 49ers. A battle that saw Kansas City storm back late and hoist the Lombardi. Trump, like many, was impressed. He wanted to send his congratulations, and, well, that’s when things got awkward. His now-infamous tweet praised the Chiefs for representing “the Great State of Kansas.” Oops. The Chiefs, of course, play in Missouri. Close, but no cigar.

Fast forward to 2025, and Trump is back with more football takes. He dropped a pregame official statement praising Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, and—of course—Travis Kelce. “The absolute best tight end in football (Ever!),” he declared.

And we’d say that the POTUS knows ball. Or better? He has common knowledge. Trump’s not exactly breaking new ground here. Kelce’s been lighting it up for years, and now, thanks to his Love Story with Taylor Swift, even Swifties are rocking #87 jerseys. But don’t know for how long.

The thing is, when asked about Trump attending the Super Bowl, Kelce kept it classy: “It’s awesome. It’s a great honor. No matter who the president is… It’ll be pretty cool.” UH-OH! I think, maybe, he forgot Trump’s bold statement: “I hate Taylor Swift!” Or maybe it doesn’t matter to him. Or maybe he was just fulfilling a formality that even Pat fulfilled, by saying, “I think it’s a great opportunity…” But what gets lost here is the fact that the Mahomes family ran an out and loud campaign for Trump (namely, Randi and Brittany).

As for the Swifties, they have no reason to do that. Plus, now that Trav and Tay Tay are together, of course those fans feal the TE shouldn’t have any reasons as well after such remarks. So, that’s why Swifties are trying to remind Trav about their ‘mother’. Sigh.

Well, coming back to Donald Trump and football… That’s not only the reason why we wrote he knows ball. A praise here and a couple of praises there, even Joe Biden did that. But the reason why we say he’s into the know-how’s of the game is his rants.

Donald Trump knows fans-speak

Alright, let’s get into it. Donald Trump didn’t just stop at hyping up Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce—he went full fan mode on the NFL’s new kickoff rule. “It is a really weird-looking new kickoff ‘deal’,” he wrote. And honestly? He’s not wrong. The rule, introduced in 2024, is… well, let’s just say it’s different.

Picture this: the kicker’s all alone at the 35-yard line, while the coverage team lines up at the opponent’s 40. The return team? They’ve got nine blockers in a “setup zone” between the 30 and 35-yard line, with at least seven touching the 35. Confused yet? Yeah, us too. It’s like the NFL decided to reinvent the wheel, but the wheel’s now a hexagon.

Here’s the kicker (pun absolutely intended): fans didn’t exactly love it either, when it debuted. Most called it a dumb rule, and while there were a few positive comments, the general vibe was, ‘What is this?’

So, Trump? He’s doing what he does best—rallying the crowd. By calling out the rule, he’s tapping into that fan frustration, and let’s be honest, it’s working. Whether you love him or hate him, you can’t deny he knows how to get people talking.

At the end of the day, Trump’s football takes are a mix of fandom and strategy. He’s praising players, calling out rules, and—whether intentionally or not—aligning himself with the everyday fan. And in a league where the kickoff rule is already polarizing, his comments add another layer to the conversation. And that too, ahead of the SB LIX? He knows what he has cooked, and he is devouring it right now, while the rest of us are still figuring out the ingredients in it.
