“Certainly, there’s change that comes with this time of the year.” Those were Mike Tomlin’s words in his last press conference of the season after the Steelers year ended with another one-and-done playoff exit. So, with that, Tomlin has already teased what the Steelers Nation could expect before next season comes along. And echoing those sentiments, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Insider Gerry Dulac has already signaled the first change that could be coming soon.
Let’s just say that for all those Najee Harris fans out there, this isn’t the news you were hoping for. Dulac on The Rich Eisen Show issued a worrying update on Harris’ possible future in Pittsburgh, “I’m going to guess, despite four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. They might have to move on from Najee Harris. They can put the franchise tag on him, and that’s going to cost them 13 to 14 million. I don’t think they want to do that.” That’s surely a huge disappointment for Harris, who hasn’t missed a single game since getting drafted back in 2021.
Yeah, that’s right. Harris has played and started in all 71 of his games in black and gold. But despite his unreal consistency, the Steelers aren’t invested enough to give him a franchise tag. Doing so would mean Naj would earn $6.79M in guarantees next season. And the Steelers don’t want to do that with a running back who isn’t explosive enough. See, the former first-rounder only averaged 3.9 rushing yards per carry over his last four seasons.

So, considering how the Steelers have ignored his fourth consecutive season with 1,000 rushing yards. They are taking that lack of explosiveness pretty seriously. Just look at Jaylen Warren, who signed with the Steelers after a season Harris came in Pittsburgh. Warren averages 4.8 rushing yards per carry in his three seasons, and that’s way above what Harris is offering on the ground. This shows there are clear problems with keeping Harris beyond this season if the Steelers are really interested in “Change.”
But those problems aren’t just limited to Najee Harris. It also seeps into their QB room, which faces uncertainty, as per Gerry Dulac.

Gerry Dulac casts doubt on Russell Wilson’s future
Wilson’s days are probably numbered even after showing flashes of brilliance in black and gold. Remember the time when he injured his calf just before the season started? Yeah, that was a massive setback to Wilson’s aspirations of trying to turn back his career after the Broncos debacle. Well, he did manage to recover just in time. And also got the opportunity to start in place of Justin Fields. On his first seven starts, Wilson led the Steelers to six wins, averaging 372 yards while putting up at least 28 points on board. However, after those seven games, everything fell apart for Wilson’s offense.
They averaged only 14 points while having just 263 yards in those five losses that eventually ended their season in Baltimore. So, judging by how things did pan out in the end for Wilson’s first season in Pittsburgh. Dulac believes those results may cause difficulties in Wilson’s chances to return next season: “They are going into the off-season with uncertainty at quarterback. And I think you’ve heard me say when we’ve talked before that when Russell Wilson and the Steelers agreed on a contract. In the spring that the intention on both sides was to do a longer-term deal now. I don’t know how that’s going to play out now. I don’t know if the same feeling exists among the Steelers.”

Here’s the thing: Wilson was only given a one-year veteran contract worth $1.2M. That means he will enter free agency next season, with his future yet to be decided. Even Wilson hasn’t had the meeting yet with the Steelers’ front office to discuss the possibilities of an extension, “We haven’t had those meeting yet. So we will have those, and we’ll go from there.” This makes us wonder if Wilson is going to follow Najee Harris out of Pittsburgh—based on the changes suggested by Tomlin. It’s safe to say nothing’s guaranteed anymore, considering how the Steelers continued their streak of fumbling playoffs.
