It’s simply astonishing how far Russell Wilson’s value has plummeted within a couple of weeks. See, at one time, he didn’t even have a value coming out of Denver. But the Steelers still took a chance on the nine-time Pro Bowler. And for his first seven weeks, it looked like the old Russ was back—who knew very well how to silence his critics by letting his numbers do the talking. However, you all know what happened next. Five straight losses and yet another early playoff exit have thrown Wilson’s future up in the air once again.
Mark Kaboly, who has been closely associated with the Steelers for the last two decades, gave a blunt answer when asked about the Steelers starting QB next season. He didn’t beat around the bush and simply said, “Justin Fields.” Yeah, that’s right. His answer was only Justin Fields: no explanation, no theory, and no reasons. This shows how confident he is about the Steelers moving on from Russell Wilson. See, the thing is, Wilson didn’t really fail to impress in black and gold.

For The @PatMcAfeeShowPITTSBURGH — I understand the frustration, I really do, but I pretty much moved on from the fire Mike Tomlin talk.

He did complete 214 of his passes out of 336 attempts, with a passer rating of 63.1. And that too within just 11 regular season games. Wilson also racked up 2,482 passing yards with 16 TDs and finished with a QBR of 95.6. You also add his productions in Baltimore, where he threw for 270 yards and 2 TDs. However, you cannot judge a player from his overall numbers. What a QB can pull off when your team is going through a late-season slump shows his true capabilities. And that’s where Wilson lacked.
In those five consecutive defeats, his offense failed to score more than 20 points. This shows that they clearly need a fresh start, and Fields could offer them those services, considering he re-signs with the Steelers. But judging by how Kaboly gave a straightforward answer on the Steelers QB in 2025. Fields may well return with the black and gold in a different role than this season. And you know what? Kaboly wasn’t the only Pittsburgh reporter who gave a groundbreaking update on the Steelers. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac also gave an update on Mike Tomlin’s possible future in Pittsburgh.

Mike Tomlin isn’t going anywhere anytime soon
Just imagine for a moment: Would you leave your comfort zone if you were offered millions to continue working where you have for the last 18 years? Some ambitious people may well say no. However, Tomlin says, “Save your time,” I’m not going anywhere. Yeah, that was Tomlin’s answer when he was asked whether he would get traded elsewhere. See, the Steelers have just given Tomlin a three-year extension worth $50M. Yes, the money he earns is massive, not just as a head coach in the NFL but also in all American Sports. His $16M per season ranks in the top 5 of the head coaches all over U.S. Sports.
So, when Dulac was asked on The Rich Eisen Show to explain the chances of Tomlin moving away from his job in Pittsburgh. Let’s just say that Dulac made it pretty clear what will happen, “The Steelers have no plans to move on from Mike Tomlin. Look, they gave him a three-year, $50M extension in June, and they’re not just gonna walk away from that.” And to help you understand a bit better, NFL coaches’ contracts are fully guaranteed. Yeah, that means if the Steelers do decide to walk away from Tomlin, they will still have to pay him.

Don’t forget the new head coach they bring him after that. His salary and Tomlin’s salary would just create a financial mess for the Steelers. This means that, for now, the Steelers are sticking by their 18-year head coach. So, let’s see how far he can take his team till he decides to walk away when the time is right.
