As the NFL Draft nears, the buzz around Chicago Bears drafting Caleb Williams with their first overall pick has reached a fever pitch. Even GM Ryan Poles has been candid about his interest in Williams. The USC Trojans quarterback playing with the Bears seems almost inevitable now unless a miraculous circumstance intervenes.

Hence, it is no surprise that Robert Griffin III caused quite a stir in the NFL world when he presented his controversial Caleb Williams take. Currently, a sports analyst and media figure, Robert Griffin III, expressed his stand for Caleb Williams to refuse to play with the Bears, even if they end up drafting him. When enquired by Pat Mcafee regarding the same, Ryan Poles did not mince his words in disclosing his displeasure.

In 2004, Eli Manning made NFL Draft history by refusing to play with the Chargers, the team that drafted him with a first overall pick. Manning remained a Charger for only 45 minutes and was then traded to the New York Giants. Robert Griffin III made it clear in no uncertain terms that Caleb Williams “should pull an Eli Manning” and refuse to play for the Chicago Bears if the team does end up drafting him. This notion did not fit well with Ryan Poles.

The Bears GM made his stand clear during his appearance on the Pat McAfee show.Ryan Poles said, “It pisses me off a little bit to be honest with you because we were brought in to break a cycle… I really believe we are about to break this cycle and get this city in a really good situation and win a lot of games. So, the past is the past…” Ryan Poles compared his Bears stint to his time with the Kansas City Chiefs hiring, a move that was also centered around bringing about a change to the franchise.

Ryan Poles hopes to bring about a similar change with the Chicago Bears. While RGIII might have a point in saying the Bears have not been the best at developing their quarterbacks, this drawback seems a thing of the past. Recently, the franchise has been active in recruiting players and officials, gunning towards a change that they wish will transform their image. But is Caleb Williams the ultimate weapon in this quest for greatness?

Can Caleb Williams help the Chicago Bears?

Ryan Poles had the same question when he met Caleb Williams on the quarterback’s pro day. On Pat McAfee Show, the Bears GM said, “You wanna know, does he have humility? Can he self-assess and say, you know, take ownership of what he needs to continue to work on and improve?” Talking about Caleb Williams, Ryan Poles further added, “He’s checked all those boxes so far. I’ve been encouraged with the time we spent with him and the things we’ve learned.”

It appears that Caleb Williams has managed to earn some confidence and trust from the Bears management. And when it comes to the Bears, their entire offseason has been aimed at equipping their team with individuals who would be a perfect boost for a rookie quarterback. Drafting Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, D’Andre Swift, and many others is evidence of the same. We might be looking at a whole new Chicago Bears once the NFL Draft 2024 is done and dusted.
