Quarterbacks are the heartbeat of any NFL team, but what sets the elite apart from the rest? Whether it’s pinpoint accuracy, the way they shine in crunch time, or pure leadership, each QB brings something special to the table. And while each quarterback is unique in their own way, who is the best quarterback is a never-ending debate. Everyone has got their opinion and Tom Moore considers Baker Mayfield the winner!
On Thursday’s PatMcAfee show, the offensive consultant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tom Moore, shared how he could go on any war with Baker Mayfield. When the host asked Moore if there are qualities in Mayfield that remind the coach of past legends like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Terry Bradshaw, or if each player stands out uniquely, the assistant head coach had an interesting answer!
The former college player stated that each of them has their own specialty, but Baker has got something that others don’t! “Well, each of them is different in their own right. One thing Baker does that the other three didn’t do is he is a pretty good runner, once he gets trapped and makes some plays with his feet.” He also pointed out that Manning, Brady, and Bradshaw are pretty much pocket passers and their strength is throwing football. And that’s not all!

Moore also mentioned that Mayfield is a great person and athlete. The four-time Super Bowl champion said, “Love Baker. He gives you everything that you need to win.” He also praised the quarterback for his smartness, competitive nature, and the way he prepares and studies for the game. While Mayfield continues to make his name in the NFL world, is he head and shoulders above other QBs?
Baker Mayfield is in a league of his own for the Buccaneers
Baker Mayfield has been on fire in the early part of the 2024 NFL season, taking the reins as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback. With 474 passing yards and five touchdowns under his belt this season, Mayfield’s been nothing short of impressive.

Furthermore, the Pro Bowl receiver’s Week 2 performance stole the show by capping a career-long 11-yard rushing touchdown. What’s interesting, though, is the way he’s doing it—leading with a relaxed, more approachable vibe compared to his predecessor, Tom Brady. Even HC Todd Bowles praised the QB for his consistency.
Bowles stated, “I thought he played a very smart game, I thought he was very focused. I thought he was very sharp.” And here is the reason why Mayfield stands out! Former QB Thad Lewis also appreciated the Rookie of the Year for taking the next steps and leveling up his games. Moreover, all the coaches and teammates love Mayfield for his cool and sporty nature. “He’s moving in the pocket and keeping his eyes downfield and making plays on the run, which I think is one of his best attributes,” Lewis said. And that’s not all!
Former Buccaneers HC Bruce Arians lauded the Heisman Trophy winner for his “charisma as a quarterback.” Even teammate left tackle Tristan Wirfs gave a shout out to Baker for “having fun with the team.” On top of that, Jason Licht noted how the QB is a heartbeat of the NFL and said, “He won over the entire city.”
