The New York Jets suffered yet another humiliating defeat, this time against the Los Angeles Chargers. They lost the game 6–27, bringing their season record to 4–4 in the league. Robert Saleh’s team now occupies the 3rd position in the AFC East. Saleh is visibly dissatisfied with his team’s performance, particularly the offense, as was evident from his post-game press interaction.
Jet’s current standings in the American Football Conference have grown increasingly frustrating for many, to the extent that retired Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman remarked, “I’m surprised Robert Saleh’s beard hasn’t turned gray tonight.” Undoubtedly, this increases the need for Saleh to implement a few changes within his team if they aim to secure a spot in the playoffs.

Right from the start, it was evident that the Jets were destined for a loss in this game. Their biggest weak point, the offense, was the reason behind this struggle. The Jets consistently incurred penalties, suffered from drops, and even had fumbles. Saleh recognized the team’s mistakes, as he stated, “It was a lot of self-inflicted wounds.”
They managed to convert only 3 out of 15 third-down attempts and committed eight penalties during the game, after having incurred 9 penalties in the previous game. In the post-game press interaction, coach Saleh addressed the issue of the high number of penalties, he said, “I felt like a lot of them were just putting when we were not in a good position.”
Robert Saleh continued, “I said penalties will happen.” While attempting to show sympathy towards his team, he also criticized the team’s frequent penalties, labeling their game “dumb.” The silver lining for the Jets in all of this is that their defense remains solid, but they urgently require their offense to elevate their performance to win the games.

After Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles injury, Zach Wilson took over his position, but the latter has so far failed to fulfill that role. The 24-year-old has been struggling throughout this season, and in Sunday’s game, he lost two fumbles. Against the Chargers, Zach completed 33 out of 49 attempts for 263 yards.
The Chargers’ defense made it difficult for Wilson to make his mark in the game, sacking him a total of eight times. Robert Saleh admitted that Wilson’s performance was not up to par, but he also defended him by stating that it was not his worst game.
This Sunday, the Jets will face the Las Vegas Raiders, who currently hold a 4-5 record in the league. It will be interesting to see whether the Jets have learned their lesson and can elevate their game or if they will endure another defeat.
