The year started with Cunningham being drafted by the Birmingham Stallions in the 2023 USFL Draft. He did not join the squad, instead going for the NFL 2023 Draft, where he went undrafted. Then was picked up by the Patriots, who then transferred him around from the active roster to the practice squad throughout the season. All this without seeing any game time with the main squad.
