Is Drake Maye the spark New England needs, or just a shadow of Brady's legacy?

Going into the sixth week of NFL action, the Patriots finally decided to bring a change in their QB room as Drake Maye was handed his first start in New England. Although the Patriots still find themselves trailing against the Texans, fans of Maye are seemingly celebrating his first career TD that notched up 40 yards.

Some of them took to X to express their excitement on Maye throwing passes in Patriots colors, “We finally got a guy who can push the b— down the field.” But considering the way their team is performing this season, it doesn’t seem right to celebrate a TD pass over 35+ yards that happened regularly once upon a time.

When Tom Brady used to play in New England, the expectations from the Patriots were considerably higher. They were expected to win the Super Bowl, with Tom Brady throwing more than 37 TD passes that crossed 35+ yards. However, those numbers seem like a distant memory for the Patriots fans as they are left celebrating with what they have.

Going into the clash, the Patriots lost four games in a row since their upset victory against the Bengals in week 1. Their offense is struggling each week, as the Patriots have only scored an average of 12.4 points this season. Even their passing yards in the league rank dead last, averaging only 119.4.

But when it came to acknowledging Jacoby Brissett’s performances over 5 games this season, Mayo was appreciative of the 31-year-old, “He was a warrior. He had taken a lot of hits and kept getting back up. I would also say for a guy like that to be voted as a captain in this situation and continue to be very supportive of Drake Maye. I tip my hat to Jacoby for having that egoless mentality.” Even the Patriots’ offensive line is not that great, which might have played into the awful start Brissett had this season.

Their offensive line has a QB sack rate of 11.7%, which ranks 30th in the NFL. Well, seeing their dire OL line leading the Patriots this season, Maye’s TD pass getting celebrated doesn’t come as a surprise.

Drake Maye’s first TD pass excites the Patriots fans

If Maye manages to turn the Patriots’ fortunes this season, it could be the start of something special in New England. Since the day Tom Brady vacated his position in Foxborough, the Patriots aren’t the force they were once in the NFL. With a team that is chasing to reclaim past glories, some fans are bound to get excited seeing their No.3 overall draft pick take on the Texans this week. His TD pass to WR Kayshon Boutte will be remembered for a long time as the final seconds of the second quarter came to a close.

Well, the pass was apparently so good that one of the fans claimed the Pats are back once again: “We are back.” The outpouring of love didn’t just stop there though. This fan went as far as to say that he ‘loves‘ Maye for making that throw, “Love the Drake.”

Some even called his TD pass an ‘absurd’ stat, considering the Patriots only had two passing TDs that crossed over 35+ yards since 2020. Going back to that moment, it was sheer brilliance that Maye pulled off to kick-start his Patriots era. After scanning the field for potential passers, Maye found Boutte, who had CB Derek Stingley Jr. hovering around him.

However, Boutte managed to hold on while helping the Patriots score their first TD of the game and Maye’s first ever in the NFL. But their day didn’t seem to get any better as the Patriots lost their 5th game in a row in New England.
